Dorothea Lange and Walker Evans, famous photographers in the 30's worked for Roy Stryker in the Farm Services Administration.
The camera that she has in her hand is probably postwar and would not have been used during the days when she became famous working for the FSA. This camera looks to me like a Zeiss Ikon - possibly the Contaflex - one of the first SLR's with a pentaprism. During her productive years she would have used a medium format camera - possibly a folding bellows camera, possibly a Speed Graphic, or possibly a 4 x 5 view camera. That's what all serious potographers were using in those days. Rangefinder 35 mm cameras, such as the early Leica were scorned by serious documentary photographers because of the emphasis on large negatives for capturing detail. If you Google the FSA or Dorothea Lange you get more than you know what to do with.

Was googling around and ran across this quote:
"You put your camera around your neck along with putting on your shoes, and there it is, an appendage of the body that shares your life with you. The camera is an instrument that teaches people how to see without a camera." - Dorothea Lange at: http://www.suite101.com/article.cfm/10664/82545 Picture here that appears to show her with a large or medium format camera of some kind: http://www.americaslibrary.gov/cgi-b...e.cgi/aa/lange Hmmm, apparently she had a "thing" about climbing on top of cars with cameras to get here picture taken http://www.dorothea-lange.org/text.home.htm from http://www.mdrails.com/wordslange.html "Here's a picture of Dorothea on the road with her Graflex camera that she used for her FSA gig. " Have fun! KAC P.S. edited the above link about the camera...

During the 30s photographers generally used "press" cameras, like the Spped Graphic. The more adventurous would use 2 1/4" TLRs or Leica or Contax RFs. The photos here appear to show Ms. Lange with a press camera. Checking the FSA archives in the Library of Congress, it becomes apparent that later in the '30s she used a TLR (most TLRs in use in that time frame were Rolleiflexes).
