Well now, now that I have picked myself up,...I just received an email from Canon Service Center on my 50d that I had sent in that was showing the "Err 30". The camera is out of warranty, but the repair will be done at no charge...yeah, I fell out of my chair...;)...
The usual culprit for the Err 30 is bad shutter, (only have around 11,000 shutter actuations) but they seem to be failing at around that number according to a web search on the err #, for both the 50d & 7d...So it makes me wonder if canon has realized there is an issue...with so many coming back having failed at around the same number..(I believe the shutter life average is something like 50,000)...yes I know it's only an average, but I saw way to many links of cameras having shutter issues at close to the same number of actuations for it to not be a bad trend (or bad part). I know it's all supposition at this point on my part...but hey even the shipping is free...:D

Canon's customer service is, based on my experience, outstanding...

Yes it is, this is not my first time in dealing with them...only wish they would give more detail when they send the estimate....;)

Yeah, I was just a bit shocked when I got the estimate...I really want to see what the repair entailed when I get it next week

thats a class act.

When you have websites like this one that can spread a story of bad service world wide instantly OR spread stories like this, canon really has no choice but to abandon customer service or just plain do it right, every time, 100%. A poor approach to problems like this would give them a bad reputation faster than you can say :"Photography on the net"

I just got an email saying it would cost $82.32 to fix a faulty shutter button on my 7 month old BG-E2N grip. I called them and said I thought it would be a warranty repair. The lady asked "Did you send a copy of the receipt with it?". I said yes I did. She said "OK we'll fix it under warranty." 15 seconds later I got the email showing a $0.00 repair bill.

Glad I called. Hope I get treated that way for future repairs. Over 39,000 clicks on my 50D shutter....

I had the same exact problem last September...day before I left NYC I got Err 30 around 13,000 clicks. Sent it into Canon (3 months out of warranty) expecting to receive an invoice before it was shipped back to me but they did it at no charge (and in 5 days).

Canon's customer service is definitely top notch.

Have any of you experienced ERR 50. Flash won't pop up. Don't use it much but had a need for it last night and had to improvise. Just curious if any of you have any guess as to how much it may cost. It is out of warranty by 2 months. By the way, it is a 60D.

I didnt get the error code, but I had the same issue, flash wouldnt pop up but also it would not trigger an attached flash. That 1 cost me close to $300 (with shipping) to get fixed. The invoice says "Your product has been examined and it was found that the upper cover assembly did not operate properly & the built-in strobe did not pop up, The upper cover assembly was replaced"

And on the other end of the spectrum:

I sent my 7D in for the locking mode dial modification. I am a CPS Gold member, figured I'd get the discount. Um, nope....this isn't a repair, $100 because it's a modification, therefore no discount.
I was even charged for return shipping, that's not free for modifications either....another $23.

I realize this isn't a large sum of money but was a bit surprised.
