I thought this would be the best thread to ask my question regarding ND filters or GND filters. I am looking into buying the Singh ray vari ND duo filter, however I just recently purchased the B&W 77mm kasseman MRC filter as I was goo to get the lee kit and use the cpl with it. Getting the lee filter kit with different GNDs for me is getting too expensive and I thought I I get the vari n duo filter I should be able to take great landscape shots, glamour shots outdoors in bright daylight and of course waterfalls and dramatic shots. I want ease of use and quickly detaching the filter from one lens to another. My 2 main lenses will be 17-40 and 70-200 MK II. What would be your thoughts? Should I sell or return the B&W cpl and get Singh ray vari n duo or go for lee kit?
Thank you. |

You don't want GND for portraits, isn't it?

It didn't appear that any of these shots were made with a variable ND filter, unless I read the info wrong.
So how do you guys feel about them? I bought a cheap $40 variable ND and it is terrible. There is an awful green cast, you can't get a sharp image to save your life, and you get a large X in the photo when you stop down too far. So anyways I'm going to invest in some ND's, any advice? As for HSS, I saw a tutorial online, that I've never been able to find since, for using strobes with HSS. The guy had a 580 II on camera, set that to HSS, and then triggered the strobes via optical slave. Has anybody tried this? I have tried it with speedlights, but I think you need a lot more juice. Thanks! |

^^^If there's one thing I've learned is to not buy the cheap stuff. Going to pick up the Singh Ray Vari soon b4 I head to Punta Cana for some beach shots...

Vari-ND, you need to spend the bucks. Even my cheap fixed 3 stop B+W filter for 70-200mm f2.8 IS was like $100.

I have one that I just picked up from another user. I asked a quick question over in the landscape forum as to people's opinions. I didn't get anywhere. I have only used it for a couple shots, I can't tell if it has a color cast or not. The review was good. I hope to try it a little more extensively today. Probably won't have time though. |

Hi guys!
I want to make motion blur in the crowd while my subject is posing and focused but maintaining a short DoF. Light conditions, mid/late afternoon, say about 4/5 pm. Will a 3 stop nd filter be enough for this?? Thanks.

Depends on your aperture. Using the sunny 16 rule at ISO 100 you get F16 at 1/100 of a second on a sunny day. Assuming the afternoon gets you down 1 stop to F11, a 3 stop filter would get you to F4 while staying at 1/100. To go slow enough to get the effect of full motion blur you probably want to be at 1/15 or slower. So that means going back up roughly the same 3 stops to f/16 at 1/12 of a second...
