IS isn't really that helpful for macro work IMHO. For macro work you need to be anchored as much as possible due to the narrow DOF, the IS is mostly for when you're using it as a portrait lens.

For true marco, it isn't that helpful. For pseudo-marcro stuff, I find the IS on my 100L very useful.

Get Kenko extension tubes and experiment with your 50 and 85. It will work like a charm.

For just a little bit more than the price of the kenko tube set, you can purchase the underrated Canon 50mm f2.5 macro. I bought it after I found the Canon 500d lens difficult to work with, and it has quickly become one of my favorite lenses because it is so dang sharp and compact. I now use it for baby portraits in addition to detail stuff. I shot this whole session with the 50: http://jamisonwexler.com/blog/jamiso...harlestown-ma/
I go mine used on eBay for $200.

I hope this isn't resurrecting this thread too much,
I've started doing a lot of up close work with wide angle, specifically the 28mm 1.8 with a close up filter on either the 5d or 60d. Has anybody else shot the rings up close with a wide angle?

I would think that the working distance on shorter lens would be prohibitive?
When I used to use extension tubes, I used an 85mm prime for pseudo macro stuff. Heck, even the 70-200 will do nicely with tubes.

interesting...
this ring photo is not 100% but from a recent wedding i took and i like. I am a FF addict... however, i borrowed a 60D for this wedding. this is a 60D with 70-200II at 200. op, with your equipment, 7D with 70-200 @200 is ok. Edit: i am always aiming to get the 100L until i tried this and i find that i can really spend the cash else where... not on marco. Scott

Got 60mm f/2.8 macro and I am really happy with it. Good magnification, nice compact size, quick focus.

Your 50L can get in pretty tight... don't have the 70-200 so don't know how that compares.

Before I bought my 100 macro, I used my 35L with 12mm extension tube all the time. It worked great!

If you want a unique wide perspective for macros, then look into the 35 F/2. That has a remarkable MFD which allows you to get some nice closeups while still using some of the environment too. It gives you some really unique quasi-macro perspectives.
