Default Re: Buget Safari Lens?

the 100-400 is only 3 lbs.
so 5lbs with a good body on it.
that isnt very heavy.
I use mine handheld with a monopod and I end up just carrying it with the monopod attached most of the time.
Im tall so I end up lifting the monopod off the ground when I shoot birds in trees.
im only about 170 lbs and 6'1" tall so Im not "strong" by any means.

I hiked 5 miles with my 60d, 100-400, 430ex2 flash and monopod with ballhead combo yesterday in the 100 degree heat. no problem.

its a very portable lens. the 500 f4 is HEAVY and big, the 300 2.8 is twice as heavy as the 100-400 and the 400 2.8 is 4x heavier.
the 100-400 is the lightest, smallest, sharpest 400mm zoom you can get in my opinion.

Default Re: Buget Safari Lens?

Just got back from 2 weeks in South Africa. Just as on the previous trip, the 100-400 was my main lens. Much of the shooting was hand held.....but use a bean bag or other support when available.

i'd take 2 lenses: 24-105 f4 (great landscape lens) and the 100-400 (for animals)
