Default how to make my new e-ttl work

I have a Canon sx30 is. I am ordering a bower sfd 728c ttl flash unit for the camera...because of funding I have to watch what I spend and the reviews were favorable....I know all I have to do is slide the unit into the shoe, but the instructions in the book are sort of vaque (or it could be me). what is my next step to make it become the prime flash after that...does the camera automatically find the unit or do I have to go some place else to make adjustments....for us senior citizens can you make this easy for me?

Assuming the flash is strictly dedicated to Canon, not something with a camera-selection function (and, TBH, I don't know of any that are one-size-fits-all), just slide it into the hot shoe and turn it on; it'll function just as your pop-up flash or a Canon Speedlite would, only at its own output.

Jon,
according to the mfg the 728c is dedicated to canon and the spec say it is e-ttl/ttl II, so basically all I have to do plug it in, turn it on and regardless of the settings ie auto, p, tv and av

Right. The exact behaviour of the flash will vary with the shooting mode you're in, but it will attempt to give you a decent exposure in any mode.
P: Exposure (assuming the flash is fully charged) will be determined strictly by the flash.
Tv: If the flash can sync at your selected shutter speed, it'll use that shutter speed and set an aperture for good flash exposure.
Av: Will use your selected aperture; with EOS cameras, you can opt to allow the camera to expose for the background (longer exposure) or just the subject. Not sure if the SX30 allows this as well. See pp. 168-171 in your manual for more.
M: Will use your set shutter and aperture and attempt to expose correctly at those settings.

Fastest usable shutter speed for flash sync is 1/250 sec.
