"Preview currently doesn't support this RAW file format"

Is there an update for this?

I can open other .cr2 files off a 20D

You need to do a "System upgrade".

Tony, Thanks for replying. I know it doesn't seem like it, but I did a search and then checked recent posts before creating this thread. No soon did I post then I saw the other threads saying the same thing.

Thing is I've done the update and it still doesn't work. I might be a few updates behind, so I'll keep trying and report back if nothing works.

I've done all upgrades including the system update and I've even rerun Software Update to make sure there weren't anymore.

I still can't get the CR2s to open in Preview.

I am running 10.6.8 not Lion.

OK, I'm not a Mac user, but going off of what I've seen here, so umm...

I don't know. I know I can look at cr2 files in preview from a 20D. How can I check?

Ok, I see this:

http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1513external link

I tried to install it but it said only for Aperture 3 and iPhoto 9 and won't install.

I'm trying to get these files to open in Preview like the 20D cr2s.

im running 10.6.8. preview shows 5d3 cr2 files for me. if i understand raw support on mac correctly, you need to have iphoto or aperture first to support the latest raw. so you can always download a trial version of aperture then osx will update the raw support for osx. thats what ive observed.

You are probably correct.

I just checked and there is no trial for Aperture anymore.

Even iPhoto has no trial. Though purchase price is $15. Seems I might have to pay $15 for software I don't need / want to get preview to do what it should do.

Updated iPhoto to 9 and reinstalled Raw Camera Update.... Then restarted and Preview now opens the files.

great that you got it working. sucks that you had to buy iphoto to get raw working for Preview. Why not just use DPP?

Yes, I think it's wrong that the functionality isn't inherent in Preview, but I'm glad it worked.

I will use LR and PS, but I just like the ability to quick preview before having to load a big app. Especially, if I'm just doing a quick view of some shots I might discard.

Well, the Canon ImageBrowser can do that for you as well...
