I thought this was a helpful place but it seems like every time I ask a "newbie" question, it's not the right question. Makes me scared to post questions on here. I just want to delete my account but dont know how. Thanks.

I don't know if you can delete your account. But should you decide to stay, because there are some very helpful and friendly people here you just have to weed through the crap to find them, you can always report posts as needed.
And sometimes people need to be reminded of Section 4 of the forum rules. http://photography-on-the.net/forum/...ad.php?t=50442

Also sometimes it's easier to join one of the social threads in the lounge and get to know those people. Most of them are extremely helpful and friendly.

If POTN isn't the place for you, just don't log in. I hope that's not the case. We have a good community of helpful people here. If you encounter a problem post just hit the report button and we will take a look at it.

If this thread is at the heart of the OP's disenchantment with POTN, then I'm sorry but the OP is being unfair to the wider community.
Nothing but truth laid out in fairly plain language...

I have found that simply looking through the various sections and reading the posts of others is valuable. When I have a question I'll use the search function and about 80% of the time can get a reasonable answer. This helps me avoid becoming the butt of someone's joke most of the time.
Finally, the true measure of this forum can be found in comparing the photo offerings of members when they first joined and what they produce now. More times than not you will find measurable improvement and I do believe that is as a result of the sharing of knowledge here.

Sunbeast hit the nail on the head above. OP has asked some very basic questions in other posts and IMHO received appropriate responses. Just think about it this way, when you got your first car and were wondering about the PRNDL thing someone probably taught you what it did and how to move it from P to R in order to back up. Your car has an owners manual and so does your camera. These are sophisticated machines that you need to learn. Take a class or find someone local to help you with the steep learning curve you are experiencing, but don't quit POTN just yet.

I do not know of any other forum with as much expert and tallented people ready to share than POTN. This site has helped me a lot on very diverse issues.
Yes I did felt like what you say at times but then just look back again only to see what you need and ignore what should have not been there in first place. After all there is a limit on what is available to us and also when patient, you surely get what you need in right contex.

Some folk on this forum & indeed other forums have a short memory & forget that they were beginners too at some stage. I wouldn't delete my account on POTN. Most people do try to help, but you will always find some people that believe that they "know all" & are not willing to share their knowledge. Maybe it's their fear of being shown up as being "not so knowledgable" that they ridicule people who do ask for advice. I find most people WILL try to answer your questions in a friendly & helpful manner.

Diane I hope you will stay. As several members have stated the majority of members are kind and more than willing to help. Use the "report post" button on posts you think is out of line.

Newbie questions are welcomed, this happened when I first joined up. You just have to beef up unfortunately, it is only the internet, trolls are part of the internet. As to deleting your account, this is the question I asked nearly two years ago, you can't. I will be sad to see you go, do not let the bullies or trolls get to you

Hi Diane,
I really hope you stay too, there is a wealth of information on here and as others have said, you just have to wade through the crap and don't take anything personally. It's like going to a bar, there are lots of good people that would like to meet you and enjoy talking with you and have a good time, but there are also a few jerks that just want to stir things up or try to impress you with their trash talk. I have only been on here a little while, I joined just a couple months before you, but I have learned a lot over the last few months just reading the posts, and it has really improved my photography overall. In fact, I don't think I have ever actually started a thread here, I was able to find the answers I was looking for by using the SEARCH feature. I have been shooting since the early 1970's as a hobby, but being mostly self-taught there was a lot I didn't know and didn't understand. Please don't take this the wrong way, but you stated that every time you ask a "newbie" question it is not the right answer. I looked through some of your threads and many of them you didn't even bother to take the time to answer the people that took the time to answer your question, even though the answers technically have been correct but may not have been the answer you wanted or expected. Maybe the problem is that the responders answered your question the way they interpreted it, not the way you intended it. One thing you have to remember, this is a world-wide forum, your idea of something where you live (where ever that is, you don't have a location in your profile) might be totally different than someone elses interpretation half way around the world, so sometimes answers may be seem a little vague. And those threads that you did answer apparently had the information you were looking for, as you thanked them for the information and told them it hepled answer your question. I see by later posts you followed some of the responders advice and did purchase equipment and/or software that they recommended or referred to, so some people here must have been of some assistance... Being brand new to photography for only a few months, I am sure you are getting overwhelmed by all the information you are getting, and all the variables that go into taking a picture, especially in full manual mode. I am also sure you are disapointed by some of the photos you are taking that aren't coming out "just right." This is normal! As I said before, I have been shooting for over 30 years, and still am disappointed at some of my photos, but at least now I don't have to wait for them to be developed and printed before I see any results. I wish digital cameras (and POTN) would have been around when I started, I could have saved hundreds if not thousands of dollars in bad/ruined film print costs. This is one of (if not THE) best Canon photography forum's on the net. I hope you give yourself and POTN another chance. You can learn a lot if you give it time, and trust me, it's gonna take time! I have seen some really nice photos taken with a P&S and some really bad photos taken with a 5D. As many have said before, it's the experiance of the user, not the quality of the equipment that plays a major role in the outcome of the photo. There is an incredible amount of useful information on here, and many, many helpful people that all share the same passion and interest as you and are willing to take the time to help you. Maybe you might want to consider joining a camera/photography club in your area. Or ask on here if there is a fellow member that might be close to you that can mentor you or if they are new to photography too, you both can learn together. Whatever you decide, good luck with your new camera and gear, you have chosen a great hobby and I look forward to hopefully seeing some more of your pictures on here.

Diane
There is some good information in the prior posts of this thread. Yes, this forum, like life has it good points and bad points. The good points completely outweigh the bad points, there is no argument for that. The sooner one learns to deal with opposition and some nasty folks in life, the easier your life will become. Learn to disregard those who have not learned to be helpful, they tend to be unhappy people themselves, and sometimes they cannot control themselves and do not realize what they are doing. If you are feeling tender at the moment, and want to learn, there are many, many threads that will be extremely helpful towards your growth, and you will not need to join in to learn. The links you will find here are amazing and can save you years of learning. Listening to others explain ideas and thoughts is like being in a group learning session and will expand your knowledge in a way that is hard to find today - and it is FREE. ...but Diane, you have to be willing to put the effort in. There is no replacement for effort and diligence, and time. Some people here produce unbelieveable work, it also took them time, effort and diligence - it is just that we cannot see what their effort has been. So, if you really want to move forward, develop some thick skin, work hard, pay attention and DO NOT BE AFRAID TO ASK QUESTIONS, learn to wade through the swamp, it is on the way to the top of the mountain. Good luck, I hope you come back soon.
