Hi everyone,
Is anyone using the Sigma 100-300mm F4 EX DG HSM for outdoor sports such as baseball? I will be shooting our boys in Little League and Middle School so daylight games. If you are or have used it for sports is the AF fast enough? What was you overall opinion of the lens? I am thinking of trying to pick one up in the next few weeks, if I can find one used. Thanks Bill |

I have the 120-300mm 2.8 and hate it, some people have good luck with Sigma though.

I use my 120-300 2.8 quite a bit for certain situations. Girls softball, some volleyball, basketball. Its not as quick as my canon primes, but none of my canon primes can I zoom in that range either.

Which version, the original one, or the one that was released last year w/ OS?

Doesn't hold focus, searches in and out so I end up with 2/10 keepers, if that.

I've been shooting ice-hockey, fotboll(soccer) baseball and bandy with my Sigma 120-300/2,8 OS since they start selling it and I'm satisfied. The AF is not as fast as on my EF 70-200/2,8 L IS II but it's OK.

Was able to do some better testing today and it looks like the issue is with my camera as the lens works great on 2 different 5DII bodies and a T3i. Can't afford to send the body and the glass off to Sigma to have them calibrated to each other though.

I had the same problem w/ my OS version, which was why I sent it back.

I've been using the same Sigma 100-300mm f/4 for youth baseball for about 6 years . Yes the Af is fast enough , yes it is sharp enough . Some complain about the weight , but it's never bothered me . You should have no problem with your keeper rate with this lens . it also handles a 1.4 very well .
The 100-300mm f/4 was one of Sigmas best lens . |

Thanks for the input. I bought one used on e-Bay.
So far so Good, I have used it for a couple of games and have been pretty happy with the results. I bought a cheap monopod for the weight and it helped. I am glad I bought it. ![]() ![]() ![]() |
