I really don't get very many newborns. This was a model call that I did as I want to get more practice with them and up my newborn game. I think I've tried a little bit of everything over the years from props, indoors, outdoors, different poses, etc. I'm finally finding what I like. I like soft, comfortable, more natural looking poses (aka no propped up heads on the elbows), minimal or natural looking props, if any, soft textures, and safe babies above all. I just wanted to share this sweet little one. I'm really happy with these but am open to any CC you may have, of course.
I tried to remember to shoot the same pose from different angles to give a unique perspective without having to move baby once we did all that hard work of getting her to sleep... ![]() ![]() ![]() Added a simple wrap and pulled the other foot down for a little more variety... ![]() Baby woke up so Mom fed her, and we changed blankets up to a pale pink. I'm really loving the creams and soft pinks for a baby girl. ![]() And a close-up... ![]() Since I overheard Mom and Grandma ooh-ing and aah-ing over some awake shots on some samples I brought, I made sure to get these... ![]() And always, always, always make Mom get in for a few shots. They inevitably end up loving them. ![]()

Wow Lisa, LOVE them as usual.
The only thing I might change is the color variance of her foot in the first setup. Its most noticeable in the second and third shots. Babies are super sensitive and putting her foot like that may have caused a slight loss of blood there. I LOVE LOVE that last shot with mom. Did you use a reflector there? I see a bit of reflection on moms left cheek. Its subtle but really adds dimension to her face. If you did it on purpose, I dont know what Ill do because I already worship your work. |

Wow they are stunning. I've got to attempt my first newborn shoot next week, can you give me any tips?, did you use lighting at all or was it all natural/reflected light?

Great job - the window catchlight in the open eye shot is fantastically placed!

Thanks guys! Yes, these were all natural light from a living room window. I'll post a pullback. My lovely daughter was my assistant this day. Which brings me to my first tip, bring an assistant! If not, employ Mom to help you.
![]() Other tips... -Shoot newborns in the morning. Babies are almost always less fussy then than in the afternoon. -Be patient! It takes a lot of time to get these poses. My newborn sessions usually last at least 3 or 4 hours. -HEAT. I can't stress this one enough. Do you see that white box sitting up on the chair in the pullback? It's a space heater blowing warm air on the baby. -White noise. I believe you can even download heartbeat sounds on your iphone. -Full belly...if baby is fussy, try letting Mom feed him/her. A full baby is a happy baby. |

Excellent shots as usual- I lurk more than I post, but I've always been a fan of your work.
Love the shots where you can really see her eyebrows- she has "adult" shaped eyebrows- really adds character
