I still cannot believe how hypocritical people are being in this thread, if a photographer made this they'd be buried face deep in insulting/negative posts.

Can't expect people to respect your industry if you don't care about others.

Just to add to this, awhile ago I made a post about doing free portraits for the families of deployed/deploying soldiers and received a few rather feisty PM's telling me that what I was doing was "unnecessary"

Lets see hire someone who can make an affordable logo, pay for an overpriced logo or hit up Monster and grab a template when i could have just hired some affordable..

I used to do design work and i've done plenty of free work that landed me paid jobs. One freebie was for a small script developer who gave me limited licensing rights to give away his script to my clients (ad supported) and we decided to work together. I gave away somewhere in the ballpark of 400 copies and in exchange for exclusivity did all his design work for free. He ended up selling well over 5,000 copies at $150 per license over something like 3 years. Few years later sales began to drop off and he sold the rights and went back to school. Sometimes you get really lucky by giving your work away and other times your shooting dice in hopes of winning a game of craps.

I never said how I feel about free work at all, I'm saying people on POTN are ridiculously hypocritical.

VERY wise and a GREAT idea!

Small world, kid. I don't think any of those majors is your direct customer. When I see that, I think you're a sub who was provided with copy and layout requirements.

Your market is already being destroyed by 99designs. Bon courage.

BTW, hire someone to fix your web messaging and image.

You are incorrect.

It's actually the people who upload to that site that are destroying the market not the site itself.

I'll take your opinion into consideration when you have an actual website.

Thats just semantics. It's the development of such a site as 99designs that is going to impact on your business by destroying your market.

Give it another few years for the the concept of 99designs to be more integrated into the thought process of consumers and business like yours will suffer at each passing year.

edit: If this marketing concept was ever put in place in the photography industry, I think it would be the death knell. I just don't think that luckily for the photography industry, that something such as 99designs is possible yet.

I don't think there's necessarily a need for it either, stock photography sites are dirt cheap.

Yes, but "stock photography" doesn't have photos of your wedding does it?

Imagine wedding photographers in the marketing concept of "99weddings.com'.

Yeah I think something would have to go way off course for that to ever work beyond the craigslist market, plus it's easy to get 20 people behind monitors to design something, not so easy to fit them in to one wedding.

Not so sure really that it's in the 'impossible territory".

A bride submits what she wants. Then it could be as easy as submitting your previous work in an online portfolio and then having a reverse bidding auction and the bride then chooses the lowest bid from her selection of photographers that met her needs and that she feels comfortable to work with.

Have you ever watched the show "Shipping Wars"?

In a nutshell is that not what they already do as in shopping for the price thats right anyway?

If your charging $5,000 and some guy down the street has a great portfolio and charges $500 guess who gets the job..

I don't see anything wrong with what you're doing.
