Good that you brougth it back to life. But once you got your data backed up detroy the disk and throw it out. Once a hd has failed it is not worth the hassle to keep it even as temporary storage.

As for backup. Online backup is fine as an EXTRA offsite backup. Do not rely on online backup as your only backup. Years ago many people got burned by Mozy when they changed their pricing, many people had TB's of data backed up on Mozy as the only backup and many had to extend their subscription just to be able to download all their data again.

Thanks. I have no intention of using the disc for anything, really. I have my RAW and my processed files from it now...just need to decide if i need the rest of the stuff from there or not...It's redundant now, anyway, all the important stuff is off.

I'll look into that Second Copy 2000 place...still not decided what to have for online storage.

Cheers

I just think I want to point something out:

If you have an external drive, the interface USB to Sata for example can go bad while the drive is perfectly OK. My mother has somehow destroyed 3 interfaces while the actual drive was left unharmed. -> Now I'm not talking about the board on the drive itself but the board in the enclosure.

If the board in the enclosure dies, it is perfectly OK to buy a new enclosure for the HDD, though IDE enclosures are hard to come by at an acceptable price... (and constituted my first and to date only ebay purchase - one IDE/PATA/EIDE enclosure)

In the end it wasn't the controller board. I have the drive up and running and have backed up all the stuff...the problem was a "stuck bit" somewhere which a tiny tap dislodged and set the drive running again.

All sorted, and backups done.

Some of the contacts between the controller board and the actual dive are spring loaded .
But the key thing is, you got your data back .

If Windows Home Sever 1 were still around I would suggest that... (at the time a lot cheaper than a NAS and a Drobo is just overpriced by 100% too). But version 2 has its pros and cons... (the con being a more complex backup setup... Home Server with a business product approach...).
Still, have a look at Windows Home Server 2 - it could be interesting for you. If you have an old computer with plenty of Sata ports, it might be a very interesting choice for you.

Thanks. I'll look into that.

Only if the disk is fully destroyed should it be impossible to recover anything.

Having said that, I believe it costs around 1000 Pounds to have a drive recovered in the UK.
I did look at the possibility but the cost was prohibitive for the recovery of what was mainly family photos (it was a few years back).

Needless to say I learned my lesson and have religiously backed everything up weekly since then.

Its a lot cheaper to plan for the inevitable than to try to recover from it (and drive failure is inevitable - its only a matter of when!)

2TB HDD - $120-$150. Get a portable one to put in the safe deposit box in the bank. In fact, I am switching from DVDs to bluray as archive media.
