Getting interesting. You can read AUG's and mrbobvilla's posts (link below) on page three. They have just received their RRS 5D3 L-plates.

It's disappointing, RRS always made good stuff in the past even if I never wound up buying any plates from them. Looks like I'm definitely going to be getting another Kirk L bracket although I'd like to see some more photos of them in action.

My problem with any L plate is, by the time I get it, I have just switched to Power grip and damn another big ticket...

Fourteen really good pictures that you can enlarge. I just installed mine yesterday. Form, fit, and function are perfect. I really like the way there is an extra attachment point at the strap loop. All those posts last year about L brackets not being as stable in portrait mode can be put to rest! Can't wait for the weekend to get out in 'nature' and start using it! The only tough part of the install was getting the bracket out of the shrink wrapped package! |

I have the original RRS L-Plate (I received the recall e-mail). While the plate does touch the camera where the linked pictures show the scuffing, my camera shows no scuff marks.

Haven't read the whole article yet, are they having issues with the L brackets too? Maybe that's why it's been 4 days since I ordered and have heard nothing from them yet...

But based on the pictures posted on canon rumors it's still piss poor design that leaves marks on the body. Here You see that anti-twist lip is not rounded to match body curve. |

Basic plates are flat. So the are OK if you just want to do a horizontal/landscape shot. But what are you to do for a vertical/portrait shot? If you sling the camera body and lens over the side of the bullhead's slot, you through all that weight off center of the tripod, lower the elevation of the camera...etc. Not a great thing to do. The L plate/bracket has one side that bolts to the bottom of the camera body. That part sits in the clamp when you do a horizontal shot. And when you want to do a vertical shot, you one the clamp and put the other side of the L plate/bracket into the clamp. This other side goes up the side of the camera where the cable ports are located. Check the site and look for the L plate pages. http://reallyrightstuff.com

Of course.... I'd still like to see some photos like that of the L bracket. Either way, looks like they designed this one right. |
