This set would allow you to use your existing lens and get quite close to your subjects. http://www.adorama.com/MCAETEOSP.html Do realize, regardless of whether you utilize a dedicated lens or the extension tubes, your depth-of-field will be really shallow -- which can then lead to experimenting with focus-stacking .... it's a slippery slope, pard.

cheapest probably Tamron 90mm or Sigma 105mm.
Both have excellent image quality.

I had a Sigma 50mm f2.8 Macro for a few years before I switched to all Canon gear and it was a great performer.. Amazon has it for $350-ish and you can find them on eBay for anywhere from $150-$250 in excellent condition.

or you could buy a reversing ring for a lens 50mm or less. that will give you a taste of macro functioning

I've been a happy user of the Canon 100mm f/2.8 Macro for a number of years, even though it's now "old".
You can get close with the longer focal length, you can also use it from longer distances and the AF performs reasonably well. It's a good, versatile lens.

Me too and these have really fallen in price since Canon brought out an L version. A mate of mine has the newer version and I can't tell the difference between images shot between it and mine. Not saying that there isn't a difference, just saying that I can't see it.

Ditto on the extension tubes. I use them on all my lenses, even my 400mm f5.6L A decent metal set that carries through the electronics will run about $200.

You can also get a cheap reversal ring for your kit lens....a reversed 18-55mm kit lens will get you from 1x to about 3x.
