Hi,
looking at purchasing a trigger for my 430 ex ii without having to buy another flash and using it off camera. Not too expensive would be best as i don't need a trigger to control more than two or three flashes at the same time. Cheers

I use the yongnuo 603, purchased them months ago and haven't looked back. Although I don't think they work with ETTL capabilities, but cheap and effective!

RF 603s, as with most triggers are fire pulse only. Pixel HK, Odin, ControlTL, Radio Poppers are the only ones I know of that do ETTL but they are significantly more expensive.

If you want ETTL, don't mind "line of sight" based (i.e. not RF, they don't actually need direct line of site), then the Yongnuo ST-E2 might be an option: https://thephotogadget.com/en/conten...rigger-canon-0 An RF based ETTL trigger pair will cost you more than another flash.
None ETTL RF options: Yongnuo 603s (although you will lose some sync speed), or the Cactus V5.

If you don't need radio ETTL, I wholeheartedly recommend Phottix Strato II Multi. It has great build quality, allows grouping of remote flashes and has E-TTL pass-through on the transmit unit so you can still use an on-camera E-TTL flash for fill while using the remotes in manual. A transmitter/receiver set costs around $100. Bonus is that the receivers are also compatible with their newer Phottix Odin transmitter in manual mode.

Oh and it uses AAA batteries which is a bonus. Here's the product info. page:

I use the Cactus V5s that I got from MPEX. They've served me well. They're non-ETTL though.

Can you get a clean 1/250 with them? Edit: scratch that, they're not transceivers .. damn.. I thought they ticked all the boxes

The Yongnuo sync issue appears to just be with Canons, which is irritating. I'm probably still leaning towards the Cactus to be honest, the wake up thing isn't that big of a deal for me. I prefer the idea of transceivers, they just make more sense if one goes down for some reason, or god forbid you leave the transmitter at home, you're not stuck.

Good choice, these are very reliable with lots of features. The best of the manual triggers out there IMO.

I'm leaning towards the Ojecoco ones now, feature wise they seem to tick all the boxes (including "hypersync"), and they're cheap-tastic.

Best trigger system for Canon? Phottix Odins of course!
As I wrote a review on Amazon, I cannot stress enough how great Phottix Odin system is. It's simply the best out there. What's been said is true and all I have to say is that there is no better solution in terms of reliability and versality. I can control all of my flashes straight from my transceiver. I can control 3 groups of flashes (in my case, it's three flashes) and set them to anywhere I want. I can leave two flashes for E-TTL and my third flash set to manual, etc No more running around back and fourth trying to adjust the power or trying to turn off the flash. I can simply do everything straight on my camera. The range is also incredible! Basically, It's like having PW Flex & mini, AC3 and PW Plus III all into one unit... and more! Buy these things, you will not regret. Forget about PocketWizards. |
