Thank you for the comments. Yes, we do have clean air but also the risk of moisture haze and clouds sometimes so we were lucky that night.

I agree with , if the chance to image is there just do it ! Never know how great an experience it will be until you have already done it . I'll probably miss the annular eclipse coming may 20th but i definitely will not miss the Venus transit June 5-6 , 2012 !!

Propaganda? All the news channels I watched accurately stated that the moon would only be from 20-30% brighter and 15-20% larger. Not that's not that big when it's completely dark and really high in the sky, but when it was on the horizon it was noticeably larger than usual. Anyone who thought that the moon would fill up their viewfinder at 200mm were either misinformed or fantastically hopeful. From what I saw with the 1,000 + people who were at my location, most were happy to see a larger than usual moonrise.

Robert Massey, of the Royal Astronomical Society, told the BBC that although the phenomenon makes the moon appear 30% brighter, it is the apparent 14% increase in size, as it comes within 221,457 miles of the Earth, that is most striking.

I didn't get any detail of the moon, but I still sort of like it.

Photoshop a different closeup onto it.

I'm about to post one like that.

Excuse my math but when was 14% "accurately" between 15% and 20% ?

Well if you're that critical about the media then don't watch or read what they say. So some reporters rounded up. Not that big of a deal.

Edit* and when they said between 15-20% they were referring to all supermoons, not just this one.

It's a northern hemisphere thing, Steve.

No, that was taken a few minutes after 9:00 PM last night (May 7) at moon rise. The location was about 15 miles WNW of lower Manhattan. It was cloudy here on May 6, and on May 7, it was mostly clear, but certainly less than ideal for a 15 mile shot of a skyline.
