Newborn photography & lighting

Hi all,

I've got a question that I hope some of you experienced newborn shooters can answer. Is it okay to use diffused flash when shooting a 3 week old? What kind of light (natural or artificial) are you using? Thanks.

I put my babies in front of a big window (use a bean bag) Stay away from flash unless your light is very bad. Crank up the ISO... I willeasily shoot an ISO of 2000 on my 5DII.

I generally use natural light, but lately I have been using more flash because I tend to shoot later in the day and sometimes in darker houses. It will not hurt the babies, but do things like bounce flash or use indirect flash.

The first 4 here were shot with the big soft box 90 degrees to the babies head (pointed at the top of the babies head)....the last one (head in hands) was natural light...the one in pink at the top is natural light:

Actually alien bee 400 in a large soft box because I had the space....otherwise a speed light on the camera with bounce flash or a shoot through umbrella.

I also use natural light on babies.

I like natural light with a bounce card and when applicable.

I too use the AB400 with a 30x60 softbox but not becuase I have the space. In fact, I might have the smalled bedroom 'studio" you would ever see. I have a newborn also and have shot with both the AB and natural light. The SOOC results I get with the softbox just doesn't compare to natural light. Plus, I guess I am lucky that our new baby sleeps most soundly at night so that is when I shoot the most - no natural light at 11pm!

I love natural light but its not always do-able, as most of my clients are days old and still in the dark hospitals. I have good results with diffused lighting. Just make sure your detachable flash is pointing at the ceiling (generally) and you can get some good stuff.
