Stand out? Why the focus on standing out? You say you're an amateur. Most amateurs take pictures because they love it. Standing out is nice, but it's not necessarily their foremost goal. Post your best shot in the critique corner. What you get back might be helpful.

First, learn to spell amateur. Then learn to spell please. No one is going to take you seriously as a photographer with poor communication skills.

Not being rude, just being truthful, as people with a camera are a dime a dozen but to stand out as a photographer you must set yourself apart with your work and be able to communicate clearly.

I wish there was some "easy" answer - but there's not. Those pro's who "have their name out there", are typically very, very good... and you will have to also need to be very, very good to compete with them.

There are lots of photography technique "tricks" out there, but the key to fame is knowing how to use those techniques effectively and artistically.

Do you have a Facebook account? Do you have local friends? That's a way of "sharing" photos with a fair variety of people. And, if your photography is good, then, well, people will notice. Just avoid the "snapshot" type of stuff that everyone with a cell phone puts out there!

Yes, you are being rude. In case you hadn't noticed, you're on Photography-on-the.net, not Lexicography on the Net. The photographs are what's important. It's how you communicate visually that matters most. So go out, take photos, edit ruthlessly, and post only the best of what's left. Listen to any critiques you get on the remainder and see what happens if you apply any advice you get. Ernest Hemingway and Mark Twain were lousy photographers. Ansel Adams never sold a novel in his life, just lots of photos and some basic "How-to" books based on feedback from those photos.

Mostly DPP. I've been known to use LR, PS CS5 or Paint Shop Pro, even IrfanView. But as far as I'm concerned, you need to get it in the camera, not in the computer.

Depends on your style . . . But if the photo isn't well exposed and composed, even the most awesome editing skills won't save it.

Lightroom is great for processing Raw pics (if you shoot Raw) and for organizing your photo library.

On top of LR it will be good to have an "image editor", something like Photoshop or Photoshop Elements, something that enables you to do more "sophisticated" editing than Lightroom provides. But Lightroom can do a heck of a lot!
