Default First thoughts on this 5D3

WOW

Its basically a 7D with a full frame sensor on steroids. I will really like this camera. Very clean ISO. Cant wait to see how it really stacks up against the MKIV. Not so sure why eveyone has problems with the AF systems. After coming off a 7D and a 1 series camera, this one is a piece of cake. Its a total makes sense customizable system AF system. Excellent system !!

My advise to anyone that has one is to turn off all auto AF functions and don't let the camera decide anything for you. The links that have been put up are very informative and explain all you need to know.

So you gave in and went with the 5DIII? Congrats, can't wait to read about your experiences with it. I still have a small candle lit for the 1DX, but it's just about flickered out.

My 5D3 should be here tomorrow. I got sick and tired of focus-recomposing with my 5Dc while chasing after my 2 year old. While I originally wanted (and will probably still consider it next year or year after) the 1DX, I figured my son's only 2 once... why put up w/ the archaic AF longer.

I'm not getting rid of my 7D. Still need/want it for the few airshows that I shoot. Though if a rumored 7D replacement with the new 61pt AF does come to fruition, it will also be replaced then.

I agree about the auto functions such as NR, but I'm not sure what you mean about turning off AF functions.

When compared against the MKIV, my experience is at ISO's above 6400, the 5D3 grain looks better. The 5D3 runs out of buffer sooner in continuous shooting mode, and lenses are a bit slower to find focus. But, the 5D3 will focus in lower light with less contrast than the 1D4 will. The three "C" shooting modes are nice to have on the 5D3. The 1D4 just feels a small bit snappier in all around performance and handling. My comments about AF are with the center line cross type AF points, manual point selection, and the 70-200L f2.8 MKII, and 100-400L.

Agreed. Please add your photo in the 5D3 thread. The AF is truly an amazing piece of work.

Im talking about auto selection 61 point. you have the option to turn it off. see pg 99-100 in the 5d3 manual. Unless someone could convince me otherwise, i cant see how this function is of any benefit. its gonna lock on the nearest thing it can.

I think if you're shooting birds with the clear sky in the background, then it may help...or airshow with sky as well.

Otherwise, normal shooting, not!

I was only playing Mike, I agree with you full 61 points has limited usage as far as I see.

I couldn't agree more. Just thinking about the silent shooting mode and the sound it makes, relaxes me and puts me into a deep sleep. Lol

right, it's usually better when the user selects the AF point and not the camera.

I never use it, but why turn it off? Just select something like Single Point AF (my favorite and used 99% of the time) and use it. I just don't see any reason to turn anything off.

I'm not sure where you got that from, but I haven't read any comments from people having issues with the AF system. I found it simple to use and learn, and that's coming from someone that never used a 7D before.
