CPU is 1/4 the speed of the previous gen (sandy bridge) i5, so no, not really.

thanks tim, my current laptop screen is dying on me and I will need to pull some trigger real soon.

What's your suggested spec for a laptop then?

cpu - i5? is i3 good enough? do I need to focus on the Ghz number?
RAM - I assume 4G is minimum nowadays, right?

Thanks.

CPU speed is listed in Ghz (these days anyways) faster is better but so is the number of cores, as for RAM it seems 4G is standard but as cheap as RAM is these days you can always upgrade on the cheap later.

Personally for what you want to do, I'm not sure I would go with an i3. Video editing and rendering can be really taxing on a system, most video editing software will utilize all 4 cores if they're there. I believe i3's are dual core.

Another $100 and you can get

But if your budgets tight this might work

If it is only the screen that is causing problems, you can replace the lamp. I replaced the one in my old Acer XP, which had been running 24/7 for 4 years connected to my weather station. It's perfect now, see link below.

My 1.6GHz chip, dual core with 4GB RAM and Vista 32bit runs CS5 and LR4 fine, a bit slow on some filters and cueing of tasks
So anything better than this is going to be faster.
4GB cant deal with A1 size images. And LR will crash if I cue too much.
64bit Win7 worth the extra in saved time.
