Default no 3x3 grid in 5D Mark III viewfinder

Hellow everybody,

I recently acquired the new 5D Mark II, and noticed that you can only set a 6x4 grid in the viewfinder, while the back screen allows you to set either grids 3x3, 6x4 or 3x3 with diagonals. How come?

And more important, how can you use a 6x4 grid to help composition? Is it someway related to the Golden Rule?

I would be so thankfull if some one has a pointer or/and some explanation to help me with this last question!

I thought this only appears in "Liveview"?

Gotta resurrect this thread because I just found that grid and put it on the viewfinder but it puzzles me - what's the idea? Anybody knows?

I mean of course I can use it to align the picture but composition wise?

And yes, I'm talking about 5D mark III.

The idea is to allow you to align your image to walls, the horizon or whatever you like. If you see a benefit for composition, then that's another advantage.

Okay, yes, but would not 3x3 grid have worked also for that. I thought if there's more to it...than just a random grid.
