I am moving part time back to the east coast (New Jersey) from Washington State and am thinking about making that adventure back a 'road trip'..
So...thoughts on this... Washington State south down to Las Vegas area and bird a bit of the desert there for a day or two... then on to Tuscon area for a few days...across New Mexico so I can bird the Panhandle of Texas for a few days... From there thru Oklahoma, in Arkansas and up thru Missouri (birding those two states)..over to Magee Marsh in Ohio... to Preque Isle State park in Northern PA and into the Cape May area of New Jersey. A long trip...perhaps two weeks in the car easily....thoughts? jim

Sounds like a blast. I've been hoping to do that trip, but in reverse, for several years. Sorry, but since I haven't done much birding outside of Florida and Georgia I can't provide you any real info. Post some photos so we can follow your trip across the country.

Wow, that is a road trip. I can't help you with much on your route, but I did spend a week in Tucson in March 2012. This website is full of information: http://www.aztrogon.com/
I bought "Finding Birds in SE Arizona" from the Tucson Audubon Society, amazingly detailed maps and current birding information: http://www.tucsonaudubon.org/ Madera Canyon was my favorite spot for birds and scenery. Lots of things to see and do in Tucson. This place was crowded but entertaining: http://www.desertmuseum.org/ Cactus Wren on Ocotillo web.jpg Cactus Wren Mission San Xavier del Bac web.jpg Mission San Xavier del Bac

I live in tucson and know of places to do bird photography.
I can show you around a bit. Catalina State park is nice. Sweetwater wetlands is also pretty cool. Madera Canyon (mentioned earlier) is great (its about an hour south of tucson. Agua Caliente on the east side of tucson can be good too. in phoenix there is a place called Gilbert Riparian Preserve that is very fun to shoot at. the links above are great sources. If you feel like meeting up to shoot, just let me know. Im off for the summer. Last edited by jhayesvw : 14th of June 2012 (Thu) at 01:33. |
