Hi. Inexperienced and new, so don't shoot me for asking whats probably a very stupid question!
IN product or still life photography, you see subjects which are fully lit, but the background is fully black. How is that effect carried out? I think I read somewhere that it was to do with aperture, but I may be wrong on that.

Couple of ways to do this. Use a light box with a grid that prevents spill from hitting areas other than your subject. Or put flags (metal frames covered with black fabric) between the source and background. Here's a video series you might find useful.
