Wherever you live there is almost certainly something in your area - maybe even in your own home - that strikes you as just plain UGLY - but it could still make a great photo! Maybe a building, ornament, industrial site or whatever, but please no humans or pets - I don't want to judge kids making faces, or the rear ends of bulldogs etc. (after all, someone must love them).

This challenge begins when posted, and will end at 6:00 p.m. Pacific time Friday, 29 June 2012. Winner of this challenge will be announced shortly thereafter.

Standard Rules apply:
Photo Submissions:

1. Camera - Any Canon DSLR Camera
2. Time - any on-topic photo taken at any time is eligible, although photos that have won other competitions should NOT be entered.
3. Size - Please visit Image Posting Rules.
4. Post-Processing - do whatever you like and the host will decide if it works.
5. Posting - * ONE PHOTO per photographer in each challenge.* Photo Name in the message subject line.* Camera model & lens used.* Notes -- post brief EXIF data including ISO, shutter speed and aperture used.
6. Commenting - No commenting during challenge. When the posting is closed and a winner has been declared, comments can be made in this thread.
7. Keep it clean, and both Family and Work safe.
8. Have questions, PM me.
9. Have FUN!

One challenge every week, on the following schedule:

* New Topic - After winner is declared.
* Posting Starts - Right after topic is announced.
* Posting Ends - 6:00 p.m. Pacific Time Friday, 29 June 2012.
* Winner from this competition decides the theme of the next one (and judges it for a winner) after this competition is closed.

RESULTS!

Thanks to all who tackled this tough subject. I now regret choosing "Ugly" as it has made my job very hard. One person's "ugly" is another's "cute" or even "beautiful", so please feel free to argue with my comments and choices, as these are just the opinions of one photographer who is always learning.

Flo - "Troll". Cleverly lit and focused shot of this undeniably ugly but lovable little guy. Did you use a fan to get the hair flying? I would have lost the black border and cropped about 1" off the blank space at left, but it's debatable.

Maureen - "After the Hurricane". There's heavy flooding in my area right now so this strikes a chord. This humble shack must have once been someone's pride and joy, but is now a truly sad and ugly sight. Perhaps a less tight crop might have set the scene better, but then again maybe other objects would have intruded and spoilt the shot.

MSJGD - "UGLY...but so tasty". I believe this disgusting looking dish may be dolmades. I bought a large on-sale can of them once out of curiosity, opened it up, recoiled in horror, tried a few, then threw the lot down the toilet. No question about "ugly", but the cropped dish edges bugs me a bit.

Kevan - "Red-faced reaction, for being referred to as ugly...". Really like this selectively focused shot that caught the expression perfectly. Frog or toad, I wouldn't want to kiss it. I'd have been tempted to cut this shot almost in half, though, and just use the right side.

airfrogusmc "Old Metal wall". Of all the entries, this is the one I'd print and frame if it were mine. Really like the composition and tones. Aged, yes, but ugly...?

mikewinburn - "she said, "I hope this mid-life crisis doesn't last too long...". Cute but definitely homely - what species? I take lot of bird shots myself and can appreciate how pleased you must be with this one. Maybe a bit cropped off the right and cloning out the branch running into the RH bird's head would be even better?

kbColorado - "gotta get out of this place". Your title is apt! An excellent view of true ugliness, capturing gross pollution overwhelming the strip of clear blue sky, and urban sprawl snaking into unspoiled countryside. Maybe that's even a prison watchtower in the foreground - another kind of ugly?

Keebert - "Beach bum". Really like this striking shot and in the case the central composition works, as does the focus choice. But ugly..?

1Tanker - "Algae/pond scum". Not a pretty sight, and you've even caught the marsh gas bubbles. I know all too well that it's very hard to choose a composition that makes a good photo of a mess like this, so can't say what I would have done with it.

And the winners are:

#1 kbColorado

#2 Maureen Souza
#3 MSJGD

Take it away, kb!

Congrats to kbc & Jean Guy & thx for 2nd place, teekay. I did crop my photo a bit as there were boats & debris in the swamp area where I shot this photo and I thought it detracted from this poor little house. Plus it was very overcast and dark and I wanted to get the sky out of the shot & lighten it up over all.
We were in New Orleans recently and out looking at some of the devastation still left over from Hurricane Katrina. Amazing how widespread the damages were....we had no idea it was so massive!

Life is hard...but I just take it one photograph at a time.

Thanks for the fun challenge, teekay. Red Rocks Amphitheater is one of Colorado's top tourist destinations but the view of Denver from the rocks on this otherwise beautiful day was not a friendly one.

Working on getting challenge #245 up in a minute ...

thanks

Paul
