My son is really getting into photography. and I wanted to take him out for 2-3 day excursion, so we can do some landscape photography.
We are here in So-Cal and wanted some suggestions on some nice spots to hit. for cool sunsets, mountains, waterfalls, old abandoned buildings or houses, Historical spots. just unique stuff in general . This will give me the opportunity to help him learn settings and all that stuff. thanks for any help you can provide

I took my son on a road trip thru NoCal and we went to Yosemite and then up Hgwy 49. Lots of history on that high way and into Sacramento.
I assume you mean 2-3 days starting at your location.

You could easily spend a day or two in the mountains around Los Angeles if you are into hiking. There are many good areas in the Angeles National Forest. Additionally, you might want to consider a coast trip — I'm considering a weekend trip to Santa Barbara as you have sea scenery, wineries, and the Santa Ynez mountains. Significant diversity of scenery.
Just noticed you're out in Riverside — you could do a trip to either Big Bear or the Coachella Valley.

How far are you willing to drive?
The Alabama Hills just outside of Lone Pine off 395 is a great spot. For buildings, check out Bodie just north of Mono Lake. It's the best and largest preserved ghost town I've ever been to. The Burro Schmidt Tunnel and Bickel Camp is a fun one, but it is off a long dirt road. The Kelso Dunes in Mojave are cool But this time of year, pre-dawn would be the most tolerable.
