Default Amtrak & NS

I went railfanning today in Lynchburg, VA. Observed a few rare treats for this area. Photos were taken with my Kodak P&S as my 20D was left at home because its exam week and I don't need any more distractions to keep me from studying.

-Amtrak Cresent #20 (running over 7 hours late) made a rare daylight appearance in Lynchburg.

-Saw another rare treat in one of the local NS yards. Consist of NS running long hood foward, UP winged unit, NS, CSX unit, and a Conrail (patched NS).

-View of the UP SD70 winged unit. The trackside trees and bushes always seem to be in the way when I want to take a photo of a train.

As always comments & critique are appreciated.

A little bit of power from everyone in the second shot. You can allways count on AMTRAK being late and unless you are the rider it works out for some people(us railfans).

Pretty darn good pic for the AMTK, but I would of waited just a couple more seconds to fill up the whole frame....Damn, are those pics crisp! nice shots.AMTK being late is it's Trade Mark, but can't blame them though, it's not their tracks, a lot of people blame AMTK for it, .

In my experience, it's rare actually catching AMTRAK running.

Nice capture of the big "A". Wish that .gov could run that thing the way they run TVA - as a separate, self-sustaining entity.

BTW, is your original image capable of seeing the numbers on all the units? Just had a CSX sandwiched between two NS here a couple of days ago. I had NS 7381 followed by CSX 7386. Could not read the numbers on the third NS unit.

This consist read NS 8046 leading, UP 4188, NS 2569, CSX 7855, Conrail patched NS 8205. I remember commenting on your post about how rare it is to see CSX running with NS and then today I get to witness it first hand.

The only thing this consist was missing was BNSF.

Looks like NS and CSX have made some kind of motive power deal. Probably to avoid having to lease as many BNSF units. There were a lot of them around here in the recent past, but I've not seen a pumpkin since around June. I do see the rare but occasional UP engine though.

We had a few pumpkins hanging around the local NS yard last month I believe and I saw a few around Thanksgiving, but none since then. I am happily seeing alot more UP around here now.

Nice captures. The second and third are so crisp I can almost smell the air!
