Default Remote controlled 1D X cameras for London Olympics

This article from Reuters is cool, they show how they're installing remote controlled 1D X cameras that can focus, turn in all directions (thanks to the rig) and sends pictures wirelessly for processing. Lots of sexy pictures in the article

aplanding.com

I've been going there for years. These guys are doing it from remote control helicopters and telescopic poles.

I'm guessing it's so they can get the photos processed as fast as they can and get them into the main stream.

There was a great article in News Photographer (NPPA's publication) about 'spec' shooters replacing staff photographers, and they cited the number of professionals that normally shoot the games, and the greatly reduced number of those for this year...

Seeing all those robot cams bolted to the railing with no human beings is kind of a sad moment.

are the cameras in liveview so they can aim? Or are they all completely automated?

They are controlled via a hard line to a computer which will then transmit the photos to an editor. There was a video somewhere explaining how the system works

Apparently a Canon warehouse up north was effected by the flooding, I was told yesterday. As if the wait for our pre-orders couldn't get any more painful
