Hi Photo Guy. We have a sub-forum for talking about computers. This would be better off there.

Cheers,
Bryan

This.

List your budget and what programs you want to run. Be sure to note any items that you will carry over from your current setup. (monitor, keyboard ect.)

Also note if your are willing to build your own, a bit more work but well worth the effort.

Thanks everyone, sorry for not being more specific. I am looking for a desktop(CPU only) Windows 7 or 8. I have a dell monitor, mouse and keyboard. My budget is $700-$1000, i plan on using LR 4.1 and photoshop with the computer.. Here are a couple that I have been looking at but not sure if they are what I need.

Another thing you should mention is where you are at right now with your current setup, what you shoot for (Personal? Professional?) and maybe if you have some tech skills you might be able to build your own which is really easy.

The setup I have now is a dinosaur(Windows XP lol), I got it back in 04. I added some memory and it was ok for awhile. I don't really want the hassle of building a computer right now, thats not to say I want in the future.

You'd build a really nice system for $1,000.

I spent $1,200 and upgraded my machine. I used the same monitor, keyboard, mouse and one of the 640GB HDD's. I also had purchased a version of Windows 7 64 bit before I started building this.

I started with a Pentium D 3.4 Ghz system with 4 GB of RAM. It was painfully slow and I couldn't up the memory anymore because it was a 32 bit machine. I was maxed out memory wise...

I bought an ASUS Motherboard, i7 CPU 3.4ghz, 16GB RAM, 3TB internal drive (for photos only) a 128GB SSD Drive, and a 1GB video card. I couldn't be happier!

Sounds like all you'd need to add to that would be a case and they range from $50 - $200. I bought my case 3 years ago for $110 with a couple of extra large fans and a 1000 watt power supply.

The only thing I really scrimped on was the case because the case sits under my desk in a cubby hole so you really can't see it so I didn't have any need for fancy plexiglass case and LED lighting or anything. I just wanted something basic that I could easily keep cool inside. Oh, and it has 9 drive bays. At one point I only had one drive bay open. Now I think I have 5 open bays after the upgrade.

It handles my large photos just fine. Photoshop CS 5 runs like a charm now, Lightroom 4 runs pretty well on it also.

Build it and the faster workflow will come.

If I was building now, I'd buy something with either an i5 or i7 Ivy Bridge Quad, at least 8GB of RAM, and dedicated video card. I would also get at least 2 SSD drives. One for the OS + Apps, and another for photo related, like cache/scratch and photos from current project. Then I'll have regular hard drives for "permanent" storage. Probably at least one internally and several external ones for backups.

I'm not sure if 2 SSD drives is practical. I'd wait for the prices to drop on those before investing in 2 of them. A 512GB Crucial SSD drive is $409 at Newegg. If you need to partition it I think you can do that easily.

Hmmm... They have a 1TB for $319. It's OCZ so I don't know if that's a good one or not...
