Is this calculated from the end of the lens or the focal plane?

well, is it that critical that 7 inches or so would matter? I was taught it was from sensor.

Thanks for the info Dante. I am planning on photographing small birds from a permanent blind and I am having a friend set up a perch about a week before I arrive. Maybe in the grand scheme of things its not that important, but with small birds I want to be absolutely as close as possible and with a 400mm lens the difference between the end of the lens and the focal plane is about a foot.

I'm pretty sure it's from the focal plane. My Tokina 12-24 has a minimum focus distance of 11 inches, by the specifications, but I get focus lock with the end of the lens about 7 inches from a subject....which confused me until I realized that it was about 11 inches from the focal plane.

It is generally reported from the film/focal plane.
If you're that worried, carry a 12 mm extension tube along as well. Should move your infinity point to about 13 m. away and allow you to focus about 1 m. closer than stock closest focus.

gee, I thought it was calculated from the lens' nodal point, but I could be wrong.

surely theres a limit on the lens somewhere that it focus's to? I'd say set your hide to a little bit more than this minimum distance just to be save.
