Talking Shooting the Olympics with a Large Format?

Oh yeah. David Burnett spotted shooting the Olympics with his large format camera.........
http://www.petapixel.com/2012/08/07/...ic-gymnastics/

If you're curious what kind of work he turns out with it, his website is here with shots from previous Olympic events:http://www.davidburnett.com/index.html

I admire his dedication, but question his grasp of reality?

I think that's exactly what he's trying to get away from. I mean, all of these technically perfect images from all the modern cameras are zipping across the news wires seconds after they're taken. They are sharp, very accurate in color... they perfectly represent what happened.

I think Burnett is trying to create Olympic images with a timeless feel, a look that bestows the importance of the event.

A lot of his work hits me like a hammer, I love it.

He also had two extra bodies hanging from his neck in another photo.

Holga and a pair of 5Dc's it's not about the camera, it's about being able to get the shot, and from what I've seen he's mastered that.

Here's the first shot of the large format at work that I saw:

And an excellent sit down with him on Vimeo:

I'm very much looking forward to seeing what he brings home from London.

Thing is, it's pretty easy to play with such things, when you do, what he was doing in this games. He was basically shooting for IOC, and considering IOC is getting Getty's feed, it doesn't really matter if he misses anything or everything. IOC and their sports museum will still have shoots of everyone and everything. Yet I still think this is joke for everyone else working their asses off during olympics (yes, it's not really great thing to cover, but damn hard work).

I think it's incredibly arrogant and condescending of you to assume he isn't also working his ass off. The guy has a solid portfolio that goes back decades. People are paying him specifically because he's getting the shots others aren't. How many hundreds of photographers are there getting essentially the same shots as each other? He's created a niche for himself shooting things in ways that are, in our time, unconventional. Creating images that stand out from the crowd and get noticed. You say he's "missing" shots. I say he's getting the shots everyone else is missing.
