A70 - Prob w/ PTP Driver/ No Camera Found

New Canon A70. Installed software FIRST, before attaching camera via USB. Attached camera, in replay mode, turned on, Windows XP Pro recognized new device, recognized Canon Camera, automatically installed driver and then gave notice "driver did not install properly, device may not work properly." ZoomBrowser says "no camera." Went to device manager, yellow Exclamation point. Have deleted device, deleted Canon software, reinstalled numerous times. No luck. Tried using TWAIN driver from Canon, still no luck. Have gone into winnt "inf" file and removed Canon entries. Reinstalled XPSP1a, no luck. Have same version of ptpusd.dll on my laptop, AND I INSTALLED SOFTWARE ON LAPTOP AND RECOGNIZED CAMERA NO PROBLEM. Both system XP, both up to date. My desktop, however WILL NOT "PROPERLY" INSTALL PTP (PICTURE TRANSFER PROTOCOL DRIVER) AND WITHOUT THAT THEN A70 IS NOT RECOGNIZED. Canon web site of zero help. HELP ME!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Thanks.

I don't use the PtP protocol on my XP-laptop, and the normal communication setting works fine for me.

I have a partial answer now, to my own inquiry. First, you might note that Canon's customer service hours are longer than posted on web. Open 'til like midnight on weekdays, and also open on Sat to 8 p.m.

Anyway, Canon told me the problem was my "other" imaging" devices. I was told to unplug my unplug my Visioneer scanner, reboot, and then reconnect my A70. I did that and voila, the camera was recognized by windows. Keep in mind that I had previously unplugged and completely uninstalled the software for my Logitech Web cam, but that didn't do it, apparently because an imaging device, namely the scanner, remained plugged in. Canon told me that Microsoft's Picture Transfer Protocol was designed to handle only a single "imaging" device. Odd for that to be the case if true. I also asked Canon if I plugged my scanner back in would I have the same problem of the PC not recognizing my camera? I was told no, but when I plugged my scanner back in and rebooted and then connect A70 and turned it on in replay mode I got the exact same problem "Windows has encountered a problem installing the driver, your device may not work properly." And, Windows was right, no camera again. So, I unplugged scanner, rebooted and now my camera is recognized. I would also mention that when the A70 is recognized it is called Canon A70 #2, which somehow seems consistent with another error message that I have gotten when trying to reinstall the driver and get a message that another instance is still installed and that I must reboot. Bottom line, it looks like every time I want to transfer pics from my camera to my PC that I will need to unplug all "imaging" devices, then reboot, and then plug A70 into the PC. Seems like a pain to me, but it is a work around. Wouldn't it be nice if Microsoft and the people that make USB imaging devices would talk to each other and get their act together?
