I just bought one off ebay and there are several versions of this lens out there, but I thought it would be nice to have a thread to share photographs. Tell us which version you are using with your post. This is a test shot I took of a backlit Junco this morning using a mint 300mm AF II SD model (gold ring) paired with a 2x kenko MC4 teleconverter. I am looking forward to putting the combination through it's paces.
600mm @ f7.1 on a 7D and about 40% of frame and I adjusted the contrast but left the colors neutral.

It handles a 2x tc much better than the Sigma 120-300mm 2.8 non DG I tried and edged out the Sigma 300mm 2.8 non DG model I tried. Focus is not as fast as HSM but it is more reliable. I will be able to test it out further Friday. The bare lens is excellent. Cant beat a sharp autofocusing 600mm combination for $900 :)

What I hate about mine is the positioning of the AF ring, which moves when the lens is auto focusing, its right in the middle of where you would hold the lens

I have a mounting plate on mine that keeps my hands clear, but yeah, I have seen other reviewers that mentioned that as well

^- Minolta's solution for that was a sliding "door" that went over the focus ring, you might be able to rig up something like that

Took a few more shots today with the 2x Kenko MC4 attached. I do find the MC4 TC tends to overexpose a bit and has to be compensated for. F7.1 seems to be the sweet spot as far as aperture goes. I found the combo doesn't focus as easily if the 7D is set for expanded single point but it has no issue with the Zone, Single Point, or 19 Point auto-focus modes.
These are uncropped

C'mon people!:D I know there are a few others with one of the versions of this lens. Here's another uncropped image I took this morning with the 2x MC4 attached.

Mine is the "AT-X 300 SD" The outside is beat to hell, the AF is not too fast and it does not have the pins that are necessary to communicate with a teleconvertor but the optics are very good.

Thanks for sharing your photographs Kenneth. I really like your first lion photograph as well as the Bald Eagle seen from underneath.

Went to the lake at dawn to try for some BIF at 600mm (960mm effective). It was just a few degrees above freezing.
This hawk was waiting for dawn with me

IMAGE: http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8207/8209256433_e4cbe1211b_b.jpg

The Sun came up and it decided to fly away from the light. It's not easy to handhold the equivalent of 960mm without some shake. I'll have to work on that.

With dawn the wind picked up and I happened upon this hawk hunkered down. These came out better even though still handheld.

I have to work again these next few days but I hope to try again Monday.

I went back to the lake at dawn and found it misty. I thought I'd try some slow shutter speed pans. This was one of my favorites:

Oh, and for what its worth I took this later on at 600mm and f7.1. I prefocus to about 75 yards and it does okay picking out flying birds closer or further than that. It will take as sharp a photograph of flying birds as I can hold it steady. I'm still working on the steady part. :)
