selling G2

Which is the best way to sell a G2? Would it be better to sell through the newspaper or through Ebay? I'm upgrading and my G2 is only 3 months old!

Assuming you still want to sell a camera as new as your G2,
EBAY is probably your best bet. Newspapers are a drag because you have to stay home and hope the person (weirdo?) who wants to look at the camera shows up. And you have to call all those people back who leave messages on your voicemail.

Now a word about the "upgrade" roundabout:
Unless you're upgrading to something like a D10 Digital SLR, you'd be better off to keep the G2 for at least a year to get some return on your investment. You're probably going to take something like a
40 % loss on the money just spent 3 months ago. With brand new G2s shipping for well under $500.00 US you won't get more than $450 for a used G2 on EBAY. A loan with those terms would be straight out of a financial horror story.
Only you can weigh out why an upgrade is necessary. Do you need larger resolution files? Increase in megapixels from 4 to 5 is less than a 20% increase in resolution. The G3 is really not going to take much better photos than a G2, since they have the same CCD.
And, if you buy into the notion of always owning the latest and greatest, you'll probably be selling whatever you buy to replace the G2 in 6 months or less.
Why not keep the G2 for another 6 months and then upgrade? By then Canon may have a 6 megapixel consumer model out, or at least have the G5 cheaper around the holidays. Remember, this is how camera and auto companies make money-by convincing you of the need to buy another new product so soon.

Now that I've preached, I'll admit guilt:
I have a G2 also, but rather than "upgrade" I'm buying a new Canon A70! It has the Digic processor, and at $300.00 US I can take it where I'd be afraid to take the G2. Plus, it takes better infrared photos than the G2, 3 or 5! This might be an option for you to consider.

Thanks for the advice....my upgrade for me was to go to a smaller camera!!! The G2 is too heavy to carry around all the time and I am not that much of a photographer. I like the 4 megapixel but think maybe a S400 or S45 would suit my needs. I goofed with the G2 in a way but it still is an awesome camera. I don't need that much camera! I want to put the camera in my pocket and ride my bike etc and take pictures. I know I will loose a bit of my investment selling the G2 but I am prepared for that. I also have the Lensmate adaptor and macro lens to sell as well. Maybe I will put it on Ebay.

Try Helix Camera. They take trade ins. Maybe you can get what you are looking for on both sides with them.

I have the G2 and also an S400 for the exact reason you mentioned. My G2 only goes out if I have the intention of taking pictures but the S400 goes all the time. I do however like the flexibility of the G2 as far as the settings and adjustments. The S400 is pretty much point and shoot.

I wouldn't mind having both just in case I got really serious about photography but digital cameras cost quite a bit here in Canada. I think I would have to get rid of one to get the other. But only if I could get a reasonable price for the G2.

Like I said, I'm getting an A70 for the same reason. Less megapixels, but more portable. Still keeping the G2 for professional shots though. Looks like you're the frugal one after all!

Not sure what they cost up North, but I know you guys pay way more for photo gear. As with all dealer trades, you'll get less than if you sell it yourself. Here's a thought:
Find a local college that has a good photo program. Type up a simple flyer with the G2 picture, accessories, and what you want to sell it for. Put your phone number on little tearable strips at the bottom, and check with the Photo Dept. secretary about where you can post them. I've sold lots of equipment this way-it's really cool because college kids are often looking for deals on lightly used gear, and it costs you nothing but a few photocopies or inkjet prints to advertise it. If it doesn't sell, you still have EBAY.

The ability to use the RAW format and an external flash really make G2 more of a pro camera than a point & shoot. It might be something you'll grow into, but if you need the cash for something smaller, then I hope you get a decent price for it.
