Cream of the Crop

Some regulars here will know of my ambition to upgrade (donations welcome) and that I recently have been borrowing my brother's 350D. So here is when I show that I am not ready for the 20D.
Borrowed my brother's camera again over the New Year and went out to take some winter shots. Had taken a few pics and then decided to whack it in auto mode and get some pics of the kids running round outside. So everytime I pressed the button the camera made a weird noise and "error99" came up. Panic level 1: Switched to other modes and it was OK. But every time in auto mode the weird clunk and the error message. Panic level 2: Ah ha. Turn off and take the battery out. That'll sort the problem. No it doesn't. Clunk and error. Panic level 3: Leave it for a while and the magic pixies will fix it. 4 hours later. Clunk and error. FULL SCALE PANIC: OK so my brother is a mild mannered guy and he knows I would look after his stuff, but he's going to be so annoyed. He'll never trust me again and I won't even have borrowing rights on a DSLR. Options: 1. Blame it on the kids. My brother loves them like they were his own, he'll forgive them. 2. Give it back and play dumb. "It was working when I last used it." The Bart Simpson reply. 3. Confess. Not a favoured option! 4. Let my wife use it and then blame her! Has a lot of merit and could just work. The only problem was that as soon as I asked my wife to use it the error went away. But when she handed it back the error returned. PANIC LEVEL 10 - DSLR's are allergic to me and I will never be able to own one! Then my wife says. "Every time you press the shutter that little thing on top makes a noise and doesn't pop up." OK here's the laugh for you: I was wearing a cap (beloved Redskins) and when I was pressing the button, the flash was trying to pop up, was hitting the peak of the cap and causing the error! Moral or the story: Behind every idiot there is a woman with common sense!

Good one...
At least You figured why it didn't work correctly... What's Auto Mode ? I only know Av, Tv and M Aren't the little pictures on the knob just for decoration? PS : Your story is another good point for upgrading : So you can destroy your own camera and not your brothers... And with the camera comes the manual, you know : RTFM...

If I may say so this story shows that you lack even the very basics of common sense and reasoning. It shows that there is no hope for you at all, I mean ………… Redskins, come on, get a grip man

That is sooooo funny and you are sooo brave for owning up to it. Doesn't surprise me that the wife figured it out.

This will be a good reason when you upgrade to explain to the wife that if you get a 5D or 1D series you won't be bothered by that little pop up "thingy"! After all, you gotta wear that hat!!

Great story Damian and soooo good of you to share it.
Another good reason for not wearing a hat, the first one is I look bad in any hat. Hope you upgrade soon so we can be entertained by other interesting stories on your way to mastery of the camera. Wayne
