I prefer the S50, but, after all, this is a Canon forum and I'm a S50 owner, so my opinion is a little biased
Also the S50 is much more pocketable, but it lacks external flash capabilities. You can check the image quality by yourself in the G5 (very close to the S50 in terms of color rendition and with same resolution) vs V1 image comparison in dcresource.com http://www.dcresource.com/specials/G5_vs_V1/index.shtml
