Hello all,
I am thinking of purchasing this camera (well more than thinking, am going to I just have not had an opportunity to get my hands on one and my local shop won't be getting any in for a couple weeks minimum they say). I am wondering how loud the mirror slap is on this camera. I currently have a 20D, and as I am sure everyone knows, it sounds like a virtual car accident occuring when you are in the middle of a quite area (ie a ground blind in the woods) trying to snap a photo. Is the mirror slap noticably quieter on the MK II N than the 20D? Obviously the MKIIN is a superior camera in all respects, I have not heard anything about this topic though. Thanks in advance Matt

To me the IIN is louder (but it maybe just when holding down the fire button & it's going like hell for leather).

Hello,
Here are links to recordings of the mirror slap for a 8.3 shots/sec. burst and individual shots: http://the-digital-picture.com/Sound...k-II-Burst.wav http://the-digital-picture.com/Sound...1D-Mark-II.wav Here's a link to the page where I found these: http://the-digital-picture.com/Revie...ra-Review.aspx These are for the orignal 1D Mark II, but I doubt that it is much different from the N. I have the N, and it's quieter than the Rebel, which is not as loud as the 20D. There's also a "noise reduction" mode that seems to work well when you're not doing high-speed bursts. Hope this helps.

In my opinion, the 1D Mk IIN is slightly quieter than the 20D. I haven't done any formal tests to bear this out, but subjectively it does sound quieter to me. I remember thinking that when I first started shooting with the 1D.

1d...N slightly quieter than 20D but difference is not huge. However, 1D has a personal function that, when activated, slows the mirror movement down and makes the camera significantly quieter than 20D, 300D, or my old A1. this is for concert halls, etc.... it slows the rapid frame rate by a lot, essentially is for one shot at a time.
if your need is for shooting in a quiet & sensitive environment, this feature is da'bomb. |

1D Mark II is less obtrusive because it has less high frequency components in overall audio response of shutter release. See http://photography-on-the.net/forum/...6&postcount=43 for more info.

Having owned the 20D I didn't notice a significant difference between that and the 1D MKIIN. Both are pretty damn "slap happy". The 5D was softer though.

Remember that the size of the lens and the environment you shoot is has a lot to do with it. You also have the ability to lock up the mirror if needed. My worst nightmare in this area was at the funeral for President Reagan. The overall noise from that camera as the family was passing the casket was deafening.
If you need quiet get a blimp for the camera. They can be rented and shipped to you if need be. http://www.robertsimaging.com/cmItemDetail.jsp?pid=6583 for the camera muzzle. Les |

I would suppose that the faster the shutter the louder it is but that's just my opinion even though I've never used either.
