Found today: another clump apparently the same kind as in Post #1. This one is bigger and more tightly packed. Again at the foot of a street tree, but on a different street. Several of these colonies are within a few blocks.

What an excellent thread. Some really top notch photography too. I will subscribe to this thread so I can continue to see the images posted. If/when it finally rains in the Australian Capital Territory, I might be able to contribute.

Thanks. :)

For all three shots I used my 100mm macro on a 350D. A few of them I used extension tubes on also. The trick is to focus stack as a very wide aperture. You're able to get everything you want in focus, but you also are able to really blur the background. ;)

"Umbrella Mushroom" was just a normal single shot. No focus stacking, or additional lighting was used.

"Mushroom Pair" I focused stacked 30ish shots, and provided additional light with a reflector.

"Towering Mushroom" was also a focus stack of 15ish shots.

Bodies: 6D -- Trusty 350D
Flash: YN560-II
Lenses: 18-55 II -- 100mm 2.8L -- 24-105mm 4.0L -- 14mm 2.8

These speckled "fingers" are probably a fungus. They protrude from the inner surface of a decaying half wine barrel used to grow potatoes, just above the soil line. They're where a shelf fungus would be, but they don't look like shelf fungi.
