There's something about rally photography I just don't get... Oh well, roll on the track season. Here are some shots from special stages 3 and 6 of the Wyedean Forest rally.

#2 Note lack of windscreen specifically so us photographers can get a good "face shot". Some drivers are so vain...

For those that are interested in such things, all were taken with the EOS 1D Mark II and Sigma 120-300mm f/2.8 EX apart from number #5 which was the Canon EF 135mm f/2.0L. I kept trying out other lenses ( 70-200mm, 85mm f/1.8 ) during the day but somehow always ended up back with the Sigma.

You seem to have done a darn good job on those to be fair. I tried shooting at the Finnish rally last year and really struggled. Rally photography just seems to be a bit of a black art.

Brilliant shots Glenn, really like the head on shots of the 1400's in the gallery, you don't have anymore shots of 219 a white Nova do you? In particular a side shot I just want to see if they had my sponsorship stickers on the car, should have been there myself but circumstances prevented me

It was on there. I haven't got a clear picture as most of it was out of frame and please forgive the blurriness - I wouldn't normally show this picture it's not up to standard but since it's you asking...

Thanks Scott "Black art" is about right... I only shoot two or three rallies a year and I reckon I need much more practice.

Marvellous stuff there Glenn, the shots in the gallery are fantastic...You're slowly pushing me towards that 120-300 too

Nice to see the Octavia WRC in there. Interesting that it still seems to be on Czech plates so i'm assuming it was one of the old Skoda Works cars.

An interesting comment Glenn. Definately difficult not to come back with a memory card full of the same shot, even if you find some spectacular on stage like a jump or a water splash. I've had some one say to me that they love photographing rallies, but find hillclimbs boring. Not sure what the difference is myself... .

Nice set of shots though Glenn. I think I prefer the SS6 shots over the SS3 ones. Particularly like the head on shots of the 1400's. Pretty sure you've got a shot of the husband of someone I know in his Nova (his surname is Spence) in there.

Looks like the lighting was pretty tricky with strong sun and deep shadows. Nice job of dealing with that. Also really adds to the shot when you can see the crew at work in the car.

Thanks Geoff. You absolutely mustn't buy a Sigma 120-300mm f/2.8. I need to keep some advantages

There isn't much difference as far as I can see - not much overtaking in either (but then you could also say that about F1)

I think the point I was trying to make is that I find circuit photography and rally photography to be completely different disciplines. There are a whole bunch of conventions and shot styles which go to make up a "good rally photograph" and I have no idea what they are. I'm outside of my comfort zone and I haven't got a clue when I press the shutter release whether it's going to be "good" or "bad". At a circuit I know.

Yes, I agree. We found a good location on SS6. Unfortunately because of the earlier delays things were running late and we ran out of light well before the end of the stage. There were a couple more angles there which I wanted to try (Brands got some of them and they look good) but that's for next year now.
