This bad boy is being offered at $6899, a $430 premium over the previous series.

So pretty!

I'm tempted on replacing my 400mm f/5.6 with the MK 1 once the price drops a bit more.

What are everyone's thoughts on the release price? Pushing $7k feels quite steep to me, even for what is sure to be a great piece of glass.

That said, I can't wait to see some of the results that come out of this one.

I almost bought the Mk1 before I added the 300 2.8. The 300 2.8 is a great piece of kit even with me but I always wondered about the DO. for me every decision is weight based. I come from a big backpacking background where the lighter the gear is the more it cost-you'd be suprised how much gear we hike with now is cuben and carbon fiber, e.g. lightweight lenses cost.....though this Mk II weighs a bit more with the IS. Honestly I thought the DO Mk II would come in around 8-8500$.

If it performs very well with 2X TC III, I will swap my 300 f2.8L II with this baby. Can't wait to see some samples with both TCs

It's $430 more expensive than the outgoing model. As long fast-ish lenses go this is cheap.

Interesting. Amazon now states this on the 400 DO II:
This item will be released on November 24, 2014.
The operative words are 'will be'.
If so, and if Adorama is on the same page, I should have this lens in my grubbies by next Wednesday :)

^Totally different ends of the glass spectrum, but that's the date they gave for the EF-S 24mm pancake, which started shipping on the 13th... So who knows, you might get it sooner!

I still wonder why Canon upgraded this lens. It wasn't wildly popular in the 1st version. Maybe they really have pulled something out of the hat with the diffractive optic magician. I can see the 100-400 upgrade, seems everywhere I go I see that lens while I've never seen a 400 DO out and about, and I only know one person who has the 1st gen.

T minus two days and counting. Why do I think I'm the only one pouncing on this lens?
I can understand the financial reluctance for those living in the UK with the huge price penalty, maybe in europe too.
