Default 30D vs 5D

Aside from the larger sensor of the 5D..........are they pretty much the same camera??

Me think so.............Which means, we are paying an extra 1000+ for the fuller sensor.

Am I missing something here??

Guess you will be getting a 30D then Ro1 I guessed you would like the spot metering!

The 5D isn't just a larger sensor. Various other components have to be larger as well, including the (far from cheap) pentaprism. Further, I suspect the 5D is more of a niche camera than the 30D (and the 20D before it), as it needs good lenses to get the most out of it. With cheap glass, you could finish up with worse results than cropping the edges from a 30D / 20D shot - the 30D / 20D use the better centre portion of an EF lens.

You have to decide what you want. If you're a fan of wide angle photography, and the extra resolution is of value to you, go for the 5D. If 8 megapixels will do, go for the 20D or the 30D when it's available.

Well, one of the strengths of the 5D over the 20 was a better/faster buffer I believe. I don't know if they modified this for the 30D. Lack of a flash would be a non-issue for my circumstance. I do weddings and always have the strobe mounted off camera on a bracket.

Other than these I'd like to see a side by side feature comparison of the 2. Likely DPReview will publish something like this soon.

I am in the same boat,
I was hoping that today's announcement would be more interesting but it isn't

The main thing for me is, will the new 30D have improved images over the 20D?
And will the new AF algorithim be improved or close to that of the 5D?

The image quality of the 30D is similar to the 20D........

OH......and the 5d AF has 6 invisible points in the center focus......which the 30D does not have.

The 5D has a significantly larger buffer than the 30D. It also focusses more accurately (in my experience) and not least has 12.8MPs.

The extra focus points are a plus for tracking smaller objects such as birds and the like. It's easier to keep the spot-meter circle on a small moving subject than just the center AF point. BTW, they aren't functional in one-shot mode. I expected Canon to put those in the 30D, but they didn't.

If the 5D's reported focus precision improvements are passed on to the 30D, then it is an improvement of value (going by what others say here - I've never had a 20D).

funny that they list the 5D and 1DmIIN as NEW, yet the 30D has no such designation. have you euros been hiding this from us or what?

Why is the lack of a popup flash a negative? The popup flash is the dumbest thing about the 20D that I can think of.

It's so useless for several reasons - lousy position, it can't get light past any decent (as in large diameter) lens (especially when hoods are mounted), it's too weak, it can't be aimed at a nearby wall or ceiling, and more......

Dissing pop up flashes has become something of a cult favorite,. but it never hurts to have the added feature for use in a pinch IMHO..

There are times that a pop up is better than none.

Anyway.. 30D Vs. 5d IMHO is not much different than 20D Vs. 5D

Still the same change in application...
But I agree that the 30D makes the 5D seem even more overpriced to me.
