Cream of the Crop

I have been asked to shoot a wedding in April. It is my first and I agreed because it is low budget and they can't afford a pro ( or don't think it is a priority). I agreed because they were part of a family portrait I did a while back and they like my work.(They are not hard to please). I found out yesterday that they are having a cowboy-western them with everyone dressed in cowboy hats, boots and jeans.(I know what you are thinking, It is Kentucky). I am not worried about the hat shadowing the face for the couple, I will use fill flash and reflector but isn't that going to be hard for the group shots? Any suggestions on handling that. Also any suggestions for poses for this unique theme?

That sounds like a fun wedding... how about lots of hats flying in the air? I'm thinking throwing their hats up in the air - you get good lighting in their faces, and they will definately laugh a lot. Sort of a "ho down" or whatever they are called?!

Hi Char,
My very best freind had a western themed wedding a few years back that I was able to shoot. What was great, is that the b/g rode in on horse back. Yeah, it was outdoors. Granted, we're all a bunch of C&W types, so it was real easy. I wished I had some images to show you, but it being shot for free, I gave them all the film and never actually saw how I did. I guess the best way to shoot, is to go the PJ route.

you have to do some cool depth of field shots with groomsmen dueling ... and get some tight face shots with them tipping their hats

If you were on a step stool, and had the groups looking up at you, you wouldn't get the shadows, would you? Especially if you were using flash and had it up high. That's what I would do.

wow! that actually sounds like a really neat oppurtunity. If they are easy to please you can really go to town on this one. (thinking about the possibilities).. First I'd make sure they understand to atleast tilt the hats above their brow... (my uncle's faces dissapear behind their hats).. and have fun with it. It's an unusual wedding giving you a good oppurtunity to take some different shots...
sari.

Thanks. Those are some good ideas. You have jumpstarted my creative juices and gotten them flowing. I am seeing the bride putting a noose around the groom's neck. LOL. And how about the groom with his hands tied up in fromt of him being led by gunpoint to the preacher? The bride is a real cut up goofy kind of girl. She will like this. LOL VanceW: I wish you had those pictures too.

OMG, you HAVE to take that picture with the bride roping her man and dragging him in the dirt.
