Hello, fellow Leica-toting PotN'ers. It is with some sad news that I must report a widespread and far-reaching issue with out beloved M9-class (M9, M9-P, M-E and M Monochrom cameras) in the form of potential sensor corrosion. Full details, and updates (including one forthcoming from Leica) can be found here, along with a test to see if you're affected. You have have seen it posted on DPReview as well (which points to the article below).

WOW! This is a major problem. 1800 euro to replace the sensor and board! And then it might happen again! I have no words....

"We have now identified the problem and are currently concentrating our efforts on finding a permanent technical solution. Our response to this problem is a full goodwill arrangement offering free replacement of affected CCD sensors. This goodwill arrangement applies regardless of the age of the camera and also covers sensors that have already been replaced in the past. Customers who have already been charged for the replacement of a sensor affected by this problem will receive a refund."

Well that is good, how does this work for second hand users?

Leica has said in their official response that the sensor will be replaced, free of charge and regardless of warranty or camera age. It "should" apply to second-hand owners as well.

How about same issue occur after the replacement?

Leica can't keep on replacing it!

Going by the wording of the response - they can - and will. The hope of course, is that the permanent solution will come out before that should become necessary. A sensor that develops this issue is clearly defective, therefore must be replaced. So... Let them. ;)

Leica and digital seem to have really bad luck at this point.

I'm sticking to my M3 for now :)

My M9 is at Wetzlar in the workshop now. Sensor replacement, rangefinder calibration, firmware update and adjusting everything all for free.

The cover glass on the sensors being used now is the new design so it should never occur again.

Can't wait to get her back to start using her again

Update on my previous post.

I got in touch with customer services in Wetzlar to ask for an update on my M9 as I was making a rare visit home and if the camera was returned I could bring it back on my travels with me. They told me that at the moment they are out of sensors and they don't have a date for the next batch so couldn't give me a date for return of the camera.

As I had been without it since May I decided to take the offer of a reduced price upgrade to the M which could be delivered before I left the country again.

It arrived last week and after some messing about I now have it and will be starting shooting with it this week. Seems really nice so far but no hugely different to the M9. Will have to see what the first serious images look like this weekend before making a judgement

Overall the service from Leica was pretty good. Although they couldn't fix the M9 in line with my timeframes they did offer a good alternative and so far I am pleased.
