Is it feasible to track birds in flight with the 1.4x on? Will the drop in AF speed make the combo usable only for still subjects?

It will make it harder, but it depends on the camera. I think you'll still have a center plus 4 assist points if you shoot something like the 7D2.

If I don't get the shots I want with the gear I have, the only optics I need to examine is the mirror on the bathroom wall. The root cause will be there.

I've had good success with BIF and airshows using both the 7D2 and 1DX2 and the 1.4x III. Here are a couple of examples with the 1DX2. The 1.4x III was mounted even though the reported focal length may be less than 400.

Image editing ok; C&C always welcome.

There are a bunch of excellent shots on here using that combo. Pick a nice sun-shiny day and you'll have a Blast !

Some more BIF, on a not too sunny day with a 5D4 and the 1.4x last two are successive frames,

100-400 plus 1.4TC on 5DIV @560mm, ISO 3200. Hand held @1/500 sec. Not bad!! I'm happy with the results although I did underexpose it a bit, the light was poor.
