First few goes with this adapter which can either be used as an odd electronic extension tube or as I was using a lens reversal adapter that maintains full electronic control of the lens. Tried it with the kit lens. One oddity I noticed during shooting with ETTL flash was the shots were around 1 stop overexposed at my normal flash settings. I think this is because the reversed lens has an aperture around one stop wider than the set aperture. This means needing to shoot with the aperture on the lens about 1 stop smaller than you would normally at any mag and also setting the FEC on the flash about 1 stop -ve to your normal setting.
Mag range with the kit lens was just under 1:1 at 55mm and about 5:1 at 18mm. I hadn't expected to get focus at that focal length but the focus distance was 25mm in front of the adapter ring.

Interesting stuff Brian, what working distances were you getting?

Thanks Lester :)
I only measured the WD at 5:1 which was 25mm.

Really cool! Thanks for sharing this, Brian. Was expecting like slightly more than 3:1 max with this setup! Did you have a chance to look at the IQ?

Thanks for the info Brian!

You know me: What I'd like to see is a comparison between the kit lens at max mag and the MP-E at max with the Fstop at 11 and 16. I'd expect the MP-E to be sharper, but stranger things have happened.

Yup, the MP-E at 5x has a working distance of 40mm. But I don't see than as being a big issue when my MT-24EX flash heads are even closer to the subject than the lens.

Thanks for the comments Kurt and John.

No direct IQ comparison but the kit lens was noticeably worse than the MPE-65. Using a reversed 28-75mm Tamron zoom gave better IQ than the kit lens.
Having said that the reversed kit lens with the adapter does make a very cheap zoom macro lens which is very useable.

If you play with it a bit more it would be interesting to see working distance as a function of magnification.

Thanks, Brian. Did you happen to measure the magnification for the 28-75?

I guess using a Tamron 17-50 will give really good result.

Kurt - yes did measure the mag range with the Tamron 28-75. About 1.2:1 to 3.2:1

Thanks for the follow up Brian!

Seems like a good alternative for those times when you want to take a macro rig with you but you want to keep the weight down.

Lester some more MFDs in front of the coupler for the kit lens 18-55mm

0.8:1 10cm, 1.9:1 4.0 cm, 2.5:1 3.5cm, 5:1 2.5cm

Hi Brian,

I have been pointed to this post by Kurt as I have previously used an reverse auto adapter (returned);

http://srb-photographic.co.uk ...reversing-ring-1155-c.aspexternal link

However the coiled cable is very short and I found it pulled on the 18-55mm when using various stages of focal lengths and focus range.

Does the Meike have the same issue of introducing more lens creep? Or is this something that reduces when used enough e.g. the flex relaxes.

Something else with the adapter I had was light bounce which from your images above doesn't seem to suggest that this issue comes up with the Meike but can you confirm.

Many Thanks in Advance,

Bryn

I got the tubes too and not every lens talks to them. My Canon EF 70-200 f4/L IS USM gives me an error message, can't use the tubes with it. Why?
They seem to work fine with my primes.
