Sigma 150-600 contemporary

Edit: 150-600 (no clue how I screwed up the title!!)

So price is finally released

$1089 in the US. Available in March

Seems to be a far bit smaller then the Sport version

105x260.1mm/ 4.1x10.2in vs. 121x290.2mm/ 4.8x11.4in

1930g/ 68oz. vs 2860g/ 100.9oz

Slightly longer min. focus distance.

280 cm / 110.2 in vs 260cm/ 102.4 in

Max and Min aperture are the same, Max Magnifications is the same, and number of aperture blades are the same.

I'm most curious about IQ and if it has an OS option for panning as well.

Seems it only has a gasket on the mount so not as "dust proof and splash proof" as the Sport version. Kind of expected that though.

all their telephoto lenses(not counting superzooms) that have OS currently have 2 modes, so i don't see any reason not to expect the same

It does mention accelerometer in the BH description for panning. Great news, since I plan on either the tamron or sigma eventually.

Finally found a picture that showed the side with the switches. Looks to be three OS options, so panning mode is a go!!

So what is the difference between the two versions? The Sport has the dock, correct? Do they both use the same OS system and AF system? Is the firmware just going to be optimized on the sport version and limited on the contemporary? I liked the Tamron 150-600 when I tried it, and will be tempted to rent the contemporary version this summer to try out.

At this point size, weather sealing, and construction. I'd assume the C will have a little slower AF and lower IQ then the S but at this point no one know.

They both are dock comparable but until sigma releasing more info and people start testing this lens no one will know what it's like and how it compares

From a specification point of view this lens seems to tick all the boxes for my main use of airshows/aviation. The Tamron's lack of VC during panning was a real show stopper for me. Slower AF is not really an issue, it's not like even the most aerobatic aircraft can change direction that randomly/quickly. Even coming at you at high speed is pretty predictable, and a lot of the time they are pretty close to "infinity" anyway. If the UK list price is as close to the Tamrons as in the US I will be happy. Although saying that over here the Sigma S is only 50% more expensive than the Tamron when you look at street prices.

I was under the impression that the Tamron auto detected panning and changed modes for you, which is the reason for no dedicated button?

Nope it just doesn't work full stop. Actually it's worse than not working, it develops some sort of high frequency low amplitude feedback loop that actually makes the image completely unusable with shutter speeds under about 1/500. Not only that but you cannot really see that there is anything wrong with the image through the VF. As for propellor driven aircraft my maximum shutter speed is 1/160, and 1/100 for helicopters, this is a major show stopper. All I can say is that in a way I am glad that the show I rented the Tamron for was severely disrupted by high winds, so I did not miss out on to many shots.

Other than that I thought the lens was very good. I think that all other Tamron lenses with VC auto detect panning and switch to mode 2. I was told by a rep from Tamron UK that the 150-600 had to have a completely new VC system designed for it as the other system did not perform well enough at 600mm.

You're right and I know technically it's true. And I wasn't expecting anything else. But I shot a couple prop planes with my Tamron (just planes passing over my house) and it worked much better than I expected, I had nice prop blur at 1/200 at 600mm.

Interesting. I panned at sub 1/500 for an entire day with VC on and never noticed it ruining my images. They werent quite as clear as with my 70-200 2.8, but the lens is much heavier and much longer, so I figured it was my technique. I will be interested to see how 600mm at 1/400 will turn out with the Sigma then.
