I've had this lens for a a few months and I recently upgraded from a 6D to a 5D3. Since the swap I've had trouble getting sharp images. I had to resort to increasing my shutter speed. I tested the AFMA calibration and it was slightly forward focused. It took +4 to get it perfect. I still was getting pictures that were OOF though. Most of the pictures were blurry horizontally but looked better vertically. On Saturday night I was rereading the manual for the lens and realized what had happened. I must have bumped the OS switch from mode 1 to mode 2. I put it back into mode 1 and now it's taking sharp pictures at 1/160 to 1/320 again.

Another thing I have noticed is that the custom modes overrides the distance limiter. I set Custom 1 to slow focus and dynamic OS and Custom 2 to fast focus and dynamic OS. I did not touch the distance limit in either of the custom modes. When the lens is in one of the custom modes the distance limiter doesn't seem to work though.

I received my Sigma 150-600 mm lens yesterday. I've wanted to get one since it was first announced but my health issues made me reluctant to spend the money. I finally caved in and bought it. Today I'll be trying it out. Excited about that prospect. I have one question that someone on here may have the answer to. The instructions say that only the Sigma 1.4 teleconverter can be used with the lens. I have a Kenko C-AF 1.5X and a Tamron-F AF 1.4 teleconverters. If I try either of them with the new lens, is there risk of damage of some kind to the new lens?

Since nobody came through with any info on this subject I decided to try to find out for myself' I own two tele-converters, both older and not high end. The first one that I tried was my Kenko C-AF 1.5X Teleplus MC. I mounted it between a 50D and the Sigma 150-600 and tried to focus on a structure about 50 yards away. I was delighted to find that the lens focused fairly quickly and the camera exposed correctly. Next I tried my Tamron AF 1.4X C-AF1MC-4. Surprisingly, this tele-converter lens combo seemed to focus more quickly than the Kenko. Once again the camera seemed to expose properly. Now I will try to use the two tele-converters on actual subjects and then evaluate the results.

Quick update - I received my lens last week and so far I'm very happy with it. Autofocus is snappy and accurate and colors seem to be reproduced more vividly than any of my other lenses. I did go ahead and order the dock also, and it arrived yesterday. It turns out that my lens shipped with the latest firmware version, so there was no update available. I really wasn't that surprised, because I thought the AF was already pretty fast, I couldn't imagine it getting 50% faster (but I hoped anyway).

I haven't messed with the AF microadjust settings yet. It doesn't seem to be terribly out of whack at the moment, but I'll take some sample shots soon to make sure.

I tried out the dynamic OS and speed-priority and focus-priority settings briefly yesterday. It's been raining here in Texas so I didn't get much time to try them out, but my first impression was they didn't seem to make too much of a noticeable difference to me. Maybe time will change that. We should have some sun on Saturday so I plan to take it out and shoot most of the day. I have C1 set to dynamic OS and speed priority, and C2 set to dynamic OS and focus priority, so I can play around with them and see what suits me best.

In the meantime, here's a shot I managed to get last weekend shooting the house finches in my backyard.

The blurry bird in the background really completes the shot, great timing.
