Going to make my own post here shortly, but got to shoot the St. Louis Blues vs. Chicago Blackhawks preseason game this past Saturday. Here's one from the game, shot with 1DX + 70-200 2.8mk2. 1/1000, 3.2, 2500 ISO:

You guys all have some really amazing shots!! I have a question, I got a new lens 24-70mm F4 IS I know that it's not nearly long or wide enough to be shooting sports. However, It is the longest lens I'm allowed to take in the arena do you think its possible to get any decent shots with this lens? BTW I'll be sitting 10 rows up :P

Anything is possible, depends on the lighting in the arena I suppose at F4+, I would prefer a 2.8 myself and generally use my 70-200 2.8L II for best results.

As for not wide enough, its too wide IMHO, you would generally use telephoto zoom more less.

It will work, will just be wider shots, further away from the action, a different feeling so to speak, somewhat away from the "action" shots.

the 24-70 can be a very useful FL - but you have to pick the types of shots you want to do - sort of like the documentary type of wedding photog (note photos below are not 24-70 but it you shoot in only 1 end at 70mm for you location with small crops it would be similar)

for most people, sports is all about the face, getting in tight with a long FL, and freezing that moment

that said, there are plenty of other types of shots you can get that show the battles going
- take a look at the front of the net when the puck goes back to the point for an incoming shot
- the 2 on 1 where you capture the 2 forwards, the D and the goalie all doing their thing
- the coach standing on the bench yelling at the ref with the players doing other things

just use your imagination

finally, because you will be using F4, just embrace high ISO and NR - and make it work

Hockey and wedding photographer. Favourite camera / lens combos: a 1DX II with a Tamron 45 1.8 VC, an A7Rii with a Canon 24-70F2.8L II, and a 5DSR with a Tamron 85 1.8 VC. Every lens I own I strongly recommend [Canon (35Lii, 100L Macro, 24-70F2.8ii, 70-200F2.8ii, 100-400Lii), Tamron (45 1.8, 85 1.8), Sigma 24-105]. If there are better lenses out there let me know because I haven't found them.

Very nice pics :) thanks for the advice. I know the lens is not ideal but its the longest focal length that I can take into the area. Thank you for the examples.
