They are still pushing back the wilderness here. Really though there is no wilderness left anymore. We have been everywhere but the illusion is still there. Forests are being cleared and the land turned to farming or pasture in some cases while in others replanted. The barns are a holdover from the old homesteads that were given to those willing to clear and farm. I seem to recall that homesteads were still available in Alberta back in the 60's. In the Peace River area of the Northwest part of the province. Also any land owner who's farm land adjoins "Crown Land" is allowed to lease 1/4 sections or more for grazing. To hold the lease is to agree to improve it with fencing or clearing it for pasture. Believe there were similar programs in all four of the Western Provinces.
