Not a huge difference. I have the latter one. The build quality is very good. From what I understood when looking into it, it's slightly better build quality, more "weatherproof" than the predecessor. The connection to the camera hot shoe is a lever type action, the predecessor appears to have been a screw type action similar to the 430EX connection. Functionally they both do the same thing.

I saw cheaper knock-offs on ebay like this while searching:

but decided for something like this I didn't want to skimp.

Don't know about quality etc, but you may consider remote triggers that may be a little cheaper.

Or, if you are handy at making your own, google will find plenty of DIY off camera shoe chords for you

Like Troypiggo said the later one OC-E3 has an updated metal foot as opposed to the plastic one on OC-E2.
I have heard of a few guys breaking the plastic ones.

Thats pretty much bang on what I have done but used a 6 litre and it works a treat!

Diffuses light easily and makes a nice lightweight addition. Need more play about with it but so far im happy. Need to make a few adjustments before clicking like crazy. need to go find some bugs too!

Also, currently in the making...my own custom macro ringflash. Needs lot of work+tweaking.

Here are a couple of shots of my current rig. I can't take any credit for any home made or improvised bits, but it all seems to work pretty well at the moment - until I decide to tamper with it!

It's a lightsphere knock-off from HK. I'm not 100% sold on it, still playing with the diffusion. Got it from somewhere like this cheap:

Will defo give it a try. Just finished a little while ago. Not had time to really find any bugs. Plants are rare in the house too
