Here is a sunset photo I took yesterday with the 24 105, the bird perch is a ship wreck.

No your spot on, I actually dont like the 24-105L on a 1.6x body, its not a very nice focal length as the 1.6x crop shifts the focal length too far to the telephoto end & I found AF accuracy wasnt quite as good along with general IQ, I wasnt impressed at all.

However.... on the 5D its a completely different story, bang on AF, superb sharpness & overall IQ & a very nice focal range.

The lens can make a good portrait lens on a 1.6X crop body, depending on shooting preferences. As a backup photographer (photographing with another two) at a non-commissioned wedding shoot, the focal length range was excellent, allowing close-up, more intimate portraits of the bride and groom. An example is the B&W photo of the bride in veil posted above.

For wider shots, and table shots it was terrible of course and next to useless. But I agreed with my buddies that they would cover those segments of the wedding.
